Ortrugo from Colli Piacentini "Sur Lie"

A very interesting, and surely not well-known wine, Ortrugo, from Colli Piacentini, the hills near Bologna, is actually quite good. The particular vineyard we tried is Croci, Tenuta Vitivinicola and their particularity is an Ortrugo 'sur lie' or with yeast left inside the bottle- making the wine sparkling. The grapes are hand picked, carefully choosing the best and making sure each in intact before maceration. A strong yellow color, aromatic and complex in its smell, the rareness of the wine alone was really intriguing. Dry, soft and structured; harmonious, refreshing and fantastically effervescent, the bottle was drunk in no time. Perfect for a hot, humid day, with or without some appetizers, if you can find this exquisite bottle, buy at least three!

Gewurtztraminer d'Alsazia Lucien Albrecht

Last night while out with friends we stopped by one of our favorite places in Venice for a drink- Osteria ai Rusteghi. Located near San Bartolomeo (thats near the Rialto bridge for those who dont know) its deliciously Venezian, with only cold paninis, salami and cheese plates and great, great wine. The son, Giovanni and his mom are both sommeliers and owners of this bar and would to talk to you about their selections. What was recommended to us was a Gewurztraminer from Alsace, France. Lucien Albrecht is the vineyard and is probably more known for its Reisling than Gewurstraminer, and grows many other grape types like Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, Sylvaner, and Pinot Noir. When it comes to France its hard to go wrong. Every part of the counrty of the country is unique and Alsace is no different. There can even find documents of the presence of winemakers, like the Albrecht family in the city of Thann, dating back to 1425. Not bad.
Getting back on track, the Gewurstraminer we tried is produced along the Rhin River in the Bas area (which happens to be the north part of the river). Another 'aromatic' grape, although hardly made into a desert wine, it was a pale yellow but consistent and intense in its profumes of pineapple, papaya, grapefruit and banana. Not just fruity, it also was mineral, erbacous and lightly spicy. With first taste the flavors continue as well as freshness, sapidity and heat. By itself or with a meal its a definate must try.

Assaggiatelo!!!

Malvasia delle Lipari Riserva Hauner

Another interesting bottle we tried from the Sicilian world is that produced on the island of Lipari which is situated on the archipelagos of Eolie. Well known for the Malvasia that grows there, we decided one by the Azienda Agricola Hauner. The founder is an artist from Brescia named Carlo Hauner and has actually created himself the design on each of the labels.
Malvasia in general are naturally sweeter since they are considered aromatic grapes, and often because of this they are made into desert wines. This bottle is an example of that. A golden yellow color tells us it was sun dried before pressed and its consistancy that it has high levels of glycerine. Exotic fruits and vegetables fill the glass with their perfumes, and the mineral and fresh erbe scents help us realized its freshness. The taste is just as inviting with its intensity and softness and lingers on our tongue until the next sip. Perfectly sweet, a piece of aged or blued cheese would go well for desert.

While we are trying to catch up on the wines we have tasted in the past month or so, (sorry we've been studying!) an interesting wine to mention its Perricone. During our wine tasting adventure at Mulino Stucky, the owner of Caruso & Minini, Stefano Caruso caught my eye when i saw the rare bottle. Indigenous to Sicily and now made mainly in the Marsala region, since it almost went extinct, I was anxious to see what it was like. High in alcohol and refined in both stainless steel and barrique (although only for a short time) its relatively fresh and has has a ruby to garnet color and your tipical red wines smells: viola, blueberries, rasberries, blackberries and cherries with a bit of sicilian spice and minerality. Nicely structured and persistant with a rich sapidity and freshness.
Other wines by this agency include Isula, a Cataratto, Inzolia and Chardonnay mix; Cutaja , a meritage of Nero d'Avola, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon; and Timpone, which is pure Grillo.

Speziato e minerale.
Grazie Sicilia.

Vermentino di Gallura DOCG 2007

The other night at Torre Antica (the Sardegnian restaurant we're we'd eaten before) we decided to try something other than our favorite Cannonau. The famous Vermentino di Gallura, the only DOCG in Sadegna, its a refreshing white grown on the north eastern coast. The particular bottle we drank, from the agency Giogantinu also comes in a 'superior' from- or higher alcohol level, which is unnecessary since this bottle already contains 13%. A pale yellow color with good amount of arches on the glass, it had an intense bouquet of mature fruits, nuts, almonds and minerals. On the tongue the soft roundness of the alcohol and glycerin was well balanced by its freshness and sapidity. it went great with our 'Sardegnan' antipasta of salumi, cheese and articokes and sun-dried tomatoes soaked in oil as well at the pizza we divided. Voto 82/100

Voto 82/100

Osteria da Mariano

Going on the request of a friend, we stopped by Ostaria da Mariano to have a drink and some ciccheti (or venetian styled tapas) Located in the heart of Mestre in Via Spalti 49, the main city just outside Venice on the mainland, and close to where we live, it was incredable that I've never heard of this place before. Upon entry we asked what wines they had open for us to taste. We both took the Tocai Rosso- an indigenous wine from the area around Vicenza. Mentioning that we were sent by a friend and that we are studying to be sommeliers, the two owners, Antonio and Nadia (also husband and wife) went crazy for us! Try this try that- study this study that. They even gave us their own AIS sommelier books from the course they took back in the 80's. I love meeting such nice, friendly people, especially after a long day at work! They offered us some of their cheeses, some of which were pretty rare. Four types, recommended the husband, who is a cheese afficianato. Bra, Rockeforte, and other Piedmontese cheese, all were amazing and paired nicely with the Tocai. They also had us taste the cheese with a Valpolicella which, still red, is more rounded, heavier and more tannic. This too paired well, but since it was a nice, warm day out I opted to stick with the Tocai. (Tocai is also known as Cannonau in Sardegna, Grenache in France, and Garnache in Spain) After looking at their wine cellar and discussing what could be possible questions for the sommelier test we have in three weeks, we desided it was time to go home. Osteria da Mariano is open for lunch monday through friday and dinner wednesday through friday (thats right they're closed on the weekends!) Its a short trip from Venice on bus, if you are in the area.
