Terra de la Custodia, Sagrantino di Montefalco Exubera, 2004


In honor of Sagrantino Day (that would be April 20th) we cracked open a bottle of a brand we knew nothing of. Sagrantino di Montefalco is one of my favorite wines. Like Umbria itself, it can be big, chewy and juicy, just like its Tuscan sisters over in Montalpulciano, but only a bit wilder. The cantine we tried is the Exubera, Terra de la Custodia, 2004. I was really excited to try a new brand of my favorite wine but was a bit disappointed after the first taste. The color was on, ruby red heading towards granite, thick, dense and consistent. The bouquet was tannic, slightly alcoholic, full or dark red fruits like rasberries and plums and spicy with hints of black pepper, sage, balsamic, cinnamon and cloves, and of course vanilla telling us the time was spent aging in a barrel. So far so good. Unfortuanatly, the taste was really dry and kinda bland. The acids were just apparent and the tannins were being pushed to the side by the overall wateriness of the wine. Still it was mineral, the alcohol wasn't overbearing and it still had some body. I can't way it was a bad but for sure there are better out there. Probably better suited for a pasta in some tomato based meat sauce then by itself.

In onore del Sagrantino Day ( che era il 20 aprile)abbiamo aperto una bottiglia di Sagrantino di Montefalco (Umbria)sconosciut. Il Sagrantino è uno dei miei vini preferiti, può essere succoso e masticabile come il suo fratello Brunello proveniente dalla vicina Toscana però a differenza di quest'ultimo è un po' più se mi permettete 'selvatico'.
La cantina è Exubera, Terra de la Custodia 2004. Ero molto curioso di assaggiare questa nuova marca ma son stato deluso al primo assaggio. Il colore era quello giusto, rubino che sfumava nel granato, consistente e denso. Il bouquet era dolce dato dalla barrique( troppo, troppo), alcolico, impregnato di frutta rossa matura e macerata come la prugna e lampone, speziato con sfumature di pepe e salvia, cannella e chiodi di garofano, naturalmente la vaniglia data dalla barrique , abusata in questo caso. Sfortunatamente il gusto era piatto ; solo l'alcool e il frutto anonimo erano presenti, sic! Il Sagrantino è un signor vino e va rispettato sempre. Un vino che in tavola si fa sentire con eleganza e forza. Il suo corpo e i tannini si abbinano bene a primi piatti importanti come pasta con ragù d'anatra e lepre, a formaggi strutturati e sapidi, a secondi piatti a base di carne come il cervo o al germano reale.
