PieroPan 'Calvarino' 2004

As I've probably stated before, Soave wines can have a bad rep for what they produced in 'earlier' days. However, times have changed and amid the refined producers, we find PieroPan. They make a few types of Soave including the recioto, but the one in particular I tried today was the 'Calvarino' Soave Classico. 70% Garganega and 30% Trebbiano, its straw like color and light consistancy is typical of most whites. Herby and vegetal, minty and fruity, the bouquet is intense and sharp with a freshness that remindes us of summer breezes and rain (a period in which Im desperatly waiting for!). Intense, complex, and long lasting, it brings forth the flavors we smelled just a moment earlier onto our palate. Well-rounded, clean, crisp and mineral with maybe an extra touch of warmth. A fantastic soave deserved to be opened.

On a roadtrip to the Lison-Pramaggiore area near Treviso for a wine tasting, we decided to stay for dinner and look for an agriturismo since we were starving! Down the road from where we were we spotted a little hand written sign that proclaimed 'restaurant open'- perfect! A large brick farmhouse stood at the end of the road... the type of homes that I love about Italy. We walked in, sat down and listened the specials. Not a large choice, but interesting to say the least. Between the four of us we shared an anitpasta plate of frittata, baked bread stuffed with sausage, a spinach and cheese square, sauteed radiccio and onion on a crostino and home made pancetta. For the main course I had roasted pheasant, a personal favorite, Paolo had rabbit and our friends chose trippa and musetto (musetto is like a sausage from pig meat typical to the area of emilia-romagna and trippa is nerves in a tomato sauce). I cant say I really enjoyed the wine- after all it was just table wine from the area, but the couple who ran the joint were super cute and even showed us around the farm after dinner. Three rooms are available to rent for the night and in a larger room they offer daycare and play time for children. Great idea!

Azienda Agricola Padeletti

During our trip to Tuscany for a Brunello wine fair in Montalcino, we had the pleasure of meeting many producers who had a lot to say about their product. We were taken back by one in particular, who we first met at a restaurant they also own in the center of Montalcino. The restaurant is called Osteria D'Altri Tempi, was recommended to us by a friend back in Venice but also by the owner of the apartment we rented. It was your typical Tuscan Osteria with typical Tuscan food. Our appetizers were amazing and simple. A piece of Tuscan bread with melted fresh pecorino cheese and honey (did you know Montalcino is also known as the city of honey?) and a plate of sliced meets, cheeses and a few bruschetta's. For the main course we shared rabbit in a Brunello sauce and Cingiale (wild boar). Everything was unforgetable, but the wine we drank with our dinner was out of this world. The Brunello Padelletti 1998 was so elegant and balanced I couldnt believe it only cost 20 Euro and I couldnt wait to try more of their product.
The day after the wine fair we stopped by the home of the Padeletti family, which is also their site of production and run by the son Silvano, and was shown around. Probably the oldest producers in Montalcino (that still exist) they had labels from over 100 years ago and bottles dating back to the 20's. Fermentation tanks dating back to who knows when made out of cemente and made to fit within the small walls of the place. We tasted their lastest brunello out (a 2004) which was still better than most of the brunellos I had tasted the day before, but I was still dreaming of the '98. Their price/quality is excellent and they themselves are humble and kind people who are proud of their heritage as wine makers. If ever in the area, you must check them out!

Ombre Rosse

To celebrate Valentines Day, Paolo and I decided to go to a restaurants we had been to only once before, Enoteca Ombre Rosse in the city of San Trovaso near Treviso. Claudio, the owner, is well known for his large collection of wine, but also for his character- While waiting for our table to be ready, he offered us fresh glass of Pinot Bianco of the Azienda Drius di Cormons from the Fruili Venezia Giulia region. An interesting, well rounded, fuller bodied white, good for winter. The restaurant is very welcoming and I can only guess used to be the ground floor of someones home, after noticing details of where a fireplace used to be or the arrangement of walls. Theres a garden turned seating area outside great for warm summer nights paired with cool sparklers. Once seated we ordered a bottle of Chianti Classico by the Fontodi group, 2006 and checked out the menu. I choose an Insalata di Burrata (my favorite mozzarella) and a steak tartar for the main course; meanwhile Paolo went with the pasta fagiolo for an appetizer and guancine di vitello (or veal cheek) with polenta. Tasting our wine, we discovered that 70% of the ground used to create the grapes is biologic and creates a wine with 14% alcohol andof grand quality. It is still young, so the color was purple going towards ruby adn showed many legs. Fruity smells like rasberry, cherry and strawberry, with touches of violets, graphite, cloves, licquorish and anice. It was fresh and mineral, dry, warm and soft, with a large amount of tannin. Although my cold held me back from tasting everything perfectly, we both really enjoyed the food, atmosphere and wine.

Nite in Park Slope

With our recent move back to Italy, our time has been cut short on writing about our experiences in New York- no thanks to the economy. However, we do have a few wines and restaurants that we want to talk about before we close the page. The last few weeks in my beloved New York were filled with friends and family. On one occasion friends of our made dinner for us in their home in Park Slope. By the end of the night we had gone through 6 bottles, but a few more than others stood out in our minds.
Ermintage du Pic St. Loup, a 2005 meritage of Syrah (55%), Grenache (35%) and Mourvedre (10%), is from the Coteaux du Lanquedoc region in the southeast of France. Not as well known as other french regions, its probably a good reason the price was really good for a french wine! A thick, consistant purply red, with peppermint, grass, licquorish, earth, red fruits, blackberry, chocolate and mineral perfumes. It was an intense taste that was extra persistant with a bit of freshness, minerality, warth and velvetness. A definate must try.
Another wine we really enjoyed was the Sassoalloro. Produced by the famous Biondi Santi in 2000 (American Vitners in Tuscany) it is neither a 'Supertuscan' or a Brunello, but falls rather in the 'rosso' catagory and is therefor cheaper even if the quality is top. Since it is a 2000, it has aged longer than the other bottles and had a granite color with lots of legs to prove it. Woody, foresty, plum, aloe, vanilla and bit of salt and honey, the smells were quite interesting and I wondered how the taste would compare. Dry and tannic, warm and velvety, as weird as it sounds i went well with chocolate chip cookies! (or maybe I had drunk too much by that time!)
Last and not least was a 2001 merlot called Il Tesoro. Although Im not a big merlot fan, Paolo really enjoyed this one, and so therefor we are writing about it. An IGT Toscana, it had a light granite color with light consistancy. A medium intensity with a much better persistancy, there were hints of woods, dark cherries, strawberries, balsamic and black current. It even smelled aged. The taste was similar to the smell- medium intensity, persistancy, and tannicity, it was very dry, with a medium acidity and minerality- to me it was lost in time.

"Meraviglioso" come cantano i Negroamaro.

Cannonau Josto Miglior Riserva 2004 13.5°

Like I said, Nadine brought back from Sardegna more then one bottle of wine. The Cannonau 'Josto' Riserva 2004 by Antichi Poderi di Jerzu was the bottle recommended by the owner of the wine shop. Totally different from the Perda Rubia Cannonau, this was less fruity but more tannic, dry and aged (aged more is proven by the name riserva). It was however the typical ruby red color with granite highlights. Its bouquet was closer to a Piedmontese wine with smells of truffle, balsamic, prune, cinnamin, black pepper, tabacco, herbs and strawberry jam. It was warm upon taste with a grand intesity and discrete persistance, freshness and sapidity. A wine that can mature for a longer period than the precendent and better to be paired with meats.
Vote 85/100

Stessa serata altro Cannonau. Voto 82/100

Cannonau di Sardegna Perda Rubia 14.5°

Sardegna. An relatively unknown island, a bit smaller than that of Sicily, hanging out in the middle of the mediterranean to the west of Italy; is the topic of our next wines. Its rugged terrain, beautiful beaches and endless amounts of sheep; bring many to its coasts to live the good life- if only for a week or two. Our friend Nadine was one of these lucky people to go to the vast Island, even if most of her time was spent inside working. She did however dine on maiolino and gnocchetti and most importantly, brought back some local wines for her closest friends. Sardegna has many indigenous grapes, the most famous being the Cannonau. Known most recently for its health reasons (its high quantity of antioxidents have been named in the reason that many residents of the island live longer than anywhere else in the world) Cannonau is a relative to Grenache in France, Garnacha in Spain and Tocai Rosso in the Veneto of Italy. Perda Rubia DOC by Azienda Agraria is an amazing view of what the best wines of this type can be. Typically transparent, a ruby red color with granite highlights and thick, potent legs (it is after all 14.5% in alcohol) the beautifully intense aromas bring out everything a Cannonau should be- black cherries, plums, roses, balsamic, asphalt and alcohol. Easy to drink, it was intense, warm, persistant salty, fresh, velvety and well rounded. Light on the tannins, which is normal for the grape I couldnt have enough. Paired with two equally wonderful cheeses- a Paladin Bavarian Blue from Germany- which for those like me who dont care for blue cheese this is a must try, you'll change your view! and a Renero Pecorine Stagionato from Italy. I preferred this wine more than Paolo but my other guests shared my love.
Vote: 93/100

Voto 82/100
