Carpante Isola dei Nuraghi 2006

After returning from a relaxing trip in Sardegna, we finally have some time to write about the great food and wine we had there. Unfortuanately, this once desolate island has become a huge tourist trap and authentic food and people have become harder to find. However, we did discover a few good places for original tastes. Aged pecorino cheese wrapped in mirto leaves, mirto (which I am a huge fan of and will discuss later), bottarga; which is dried tuna or mullet fish egg usually grated over pasta, gnocchetti sardi and many others.
At a very well informed wine store in the town of Castelsardo, we were introduced to an interesting and hard to find wine by the Azienda Carpante called Carpante Rosso. Its a 2006 harvest produced in Usini in the province of Sassari. This young vineyard grows your typical Sardegnian grapes like Cannonau, and Vermentino with some harder to pronounce, harder to find grapes like Cagnulari, Maristellu and Pascale. The Carpante Rosso is a blend of 90% Cagnulari and 10% Pascale or Bovale. All of the vines are in 'tree' form and have an age of around 30 yrs.
The wine is an intense ruby red color with purple highlights. Equally intense profumes of mirto (Mmmm), ripe cherries, liquorish and black pepper. The taste was warm and fresh, slightly mineral and had a touch of tannin. It was definatly still on the young side but interesting the same. The red fruit aromas continued through in the mouth and was much better when paired with some pecorino.
