Carbone, Fiano di Basilicata

Basilicata, the region which is the toe of the boot of Italy, is an unsung area, that offers much more than many know about. It has a large coast line with blue water and long beaches as well as high hills and vast plains with various crops. Grapes grow everywhere, but the best grow in the area of Vulture, an ex volcano located in the center of the territory. The soil is rich and full of potassium, and the summer sun warms the earth and creates loads of sugar in the grapes, later to be turned into alcohol. The fiano, a white grape probably more famous in Campagna, grows here alongside the aglianico, a dark red grape, which in recent years has grown in popularity and quality. The Azienda Carbone, is a family owned vineyard which produces both these wines in the 10 hectares they own. Fiano's smell is light and fruity, long lasting and slightly sweet. Canteloupe, fig and baked apple, mix with cinnamon and spice. It really reminds me of an apple pie. The taste is slightly oxidized, a wine which may be better for after dinner, instead of during the meal. The minerals and salts remain on the tongue and mix with the metals which are the most prominent. I remember tasting it in the past at an event and remember something different. I think this particular bottle has oxidized, or in other words, some air has entered the bottle causing the wine to taste a bit like sherry. Unfortunately, these are things that can happen with all food, so I will rewrite about this wine the next time I open a bottle to see if the taste has changed.

Nite in Park Slope

With our recent move back to Italy, our time has been cut short on writing about our experiences in New York- no thanks to the economy. However, we do have a few wines and restaurants that we want to talk about before we close the page. The last few weeks in my beloved New York were filled with friends and family. On one occasion friends of our made dinner for us in their home in Park Slope. By the end of the night we had gone through 6 bottles, but a few more than others stood out in our minds.
Ermintage du Pic St. Loup, a 2005 meritage of Syrah (55%), Grenache (35%) and Mourvedre (10%), is from the Coteaux du Lanquedoc region in the southeast of France. Not as well known as other french regions, its probably a good reason the price was really good for a french wine! A thick, consistant purply red, with peppermint, grass, licquorish, earth, red fruits, blackberry, chocolate and mineral perfumes. It was an intense taste that was extra persistant with a bit of freshness, minerality, warth and velvetness. A definate must try.
Another wine we really enjoyed was the Sassoalloro. Produced by the famous Biondi Santi in 2000 (American Vitners in Tuscany) it is neither a 'Supertuscan' or a Brunello, but falls rather in the 'rosso' catagory and is therefor cheaper even if the quality is top. Since it is a 2000, it has aged longer than the other bottles and had a granite color with lots of legs to prove it. Woody, foresty, plum, aloe, vanilla and bit of salt and honey, the smells were quite interesting and I wondered how the taste would compare. Dry and tannic, warm and velvety, as weird as it sounds i went well with chocolate chip cookies! (or maybe I had drunk too much by that time!)
Last and not least was a 2001 merlot called Il Tesoro. Although Im not a big merlot fan, Paolo really enjoyed this one, and so therefor we are writing about it. An IGT Toscana, it had a light granite color with light consistancy. A medium intensity with a much better persistancy, there were hints of woods, dark cherries, strawberries, balsamic and black current. It even smelled aged. The taste was similar to the smell- medium intensity, persistancy, and tannicity, it was very dry, with a medium acidity and minerality- to me it was lost in time.

"Meraviglioso" come cantano i Negroamaro.

Azienda Agricola Cecchini Marco

This past week here in Italy was a special due to the shooting stars that fall around this time of night every year. In the center of Mestre (the town just outside Venice) AIS held a fair called 'Calici di Stelle' or 'glasses of stars' which represented a few wine producers in the Veneto in Fruili. For 5 euros you could taste all you wanted!
One very prepared producer from Friuli we met was Azienda di Marco Cecchini. With a variety of grape types, they offer whites such as Pinot Grigio and Tove', which is also a white wine and combines Tocai Fruilana at 90% and Verduzzo at 10%. Really fresh and mineral, the Tove' carries out clean profumes of white fruit and flowers. Their red, the indiginous Refosco, was intense, complex and and soft. For a final treat they offer Verlit and Picolit. Both sweet desert wines the Verlit is made from the mertage of Verduzzo and Picolit grapes. Mature apricot and fig aromas filled our noses, while its velvet like consistancy remained on our tongues. Quite interesting and different then the normal desert wines. And if youre into grappa... they have that too.

Fantastico!
Una vera stella tra i calici.

Vinosia

During our time at Mulino Stucky we also encountered many wines made from the Aglianico grape. The one I'm going to write about now is a Taurasi from the agency Vinosia. Created by brothers Mario and Luciano Ercolino, they are driven to make quality wines at affordable prices. Irpinia, Campagne, the promised land for many southern grapes, is where this wine is produces and at its best.
Taurasi's in general are very powerful and well-rounded wines, and this one is no different. Deep purple, and hardly transperant with slightly spicy, mature blackberries and currents and liquorish perfumes, we were anticipating the first taste, and we weren't dissapointed. Warm, soft and velvety with a great persistancy, one could also tell it spent time in barrique.
Vote 92/100

Just before this Taurasi we had also tasted Vinosia's Doceassaje. Made from Greco di Tufo and Fiano di Avellino, which are the other two most important and famous grapes of Irpania. A light colored and refeshing white, Doceassaje has incredable smells of fresh flowers and herbs and is slightly mineral. Well structed and balanced, it would be great with grilled fish or just sipping while sitting outside and watching the tides.
Vote 90/100

Voto 92/100
