Occhipinti, Frappato 2008

This is only the second Frappato I have ever tasted, as it is hard to find in Sicily, let alone in other parts of Italy or the world. Either way, I am glad I did because I found it to be quite a great wine. Grown in the province of Vittoria in Sicily, the frappato grape lives in the shadow of its more popular brother, nero d'avola, where the mix of the two create the Cerasuola DOCG wine. The 2008 Frappato, produced by Occhipinti, is one of their two wines, divided on 5 hectars of sun filled land. After the harvest, it ferments naturally only using yeast found on the grapes. When the wine is ready, it is put into large wood barrels to age for 10 months. It is then poured into bottles where it rests for another 2 months. The wine itself is a clear cherry red with many thick legs and an alcohol level of 13%. The aromas are refreshing and fruity, with a variety of sweet smelling spices like cloves, tobacco, sage and cyclamen flowers. It is of medium body, fruity and dry and really easy to drink. It reminded me of the other frappato I've tried, making me think that the qualities of grape are easily identifiable. I could have drank 5 bottles of this wine, and given that they add no sulfites, I would have had no headache the next day!

Viglione Barolo 2003

After having one of the best Barolos I have ever had at Dal Vero Restaurant in Badoere di Morgano, we went in search of a wine shop nearby that sold it. Finding it at an industrial styled shop in Mogliano, Veneto, I asked the shop owner if they had anything similar. They recommended this Barolo, by Viglione, a similarly small and organic vineyard. Unfortuanatly, without a website, it is not too easy too find much information on them, but given we have a love for 'understated' producers, we thought we'd give it a try. Ruby red with brown highlight, it left one, really dense leg around the glass. The first impression on the nose was mushrooms and salami and that slightly moldy or truffle like smell lingered on into the taste. The aromas were strong and intense, spicy and fruity. It also had some kind of yeast-like smell to it, probably because it is organic and the yeast do not always all get filtered out of the wine. It was grand in its taste, bold and intense, yet elegant and nicely balanced. A slight bite in the back of the mouth reminds us that it still has a high acidity to it and means that the wine can last for many years to come in the cellar. Mineral and slightly salty it pairs perfectly with a nice juicy steak or aged cheeses and salumi.

Podere Salicutti Brunello 2000

Mr. Francesco Rosario Leanza is a man we met almost 10 years ago, the first time we went to Montalcino. We happened upon his home and vineyard by accident and stayed in his one room B&B at Podere Salicutti for the night. A retired chemist, Mr. Leanza obviously has a knack for finding the right combination of sugar, tannins and acidity for his wine, and we are glad to have met him before he became famous. We knew back then, before we had even thought of taking a wine course, that what he had was good, really good. We had bought a few bottles of wine, opened one on the day we married and finally another on Paolo's birthday. 2000 was an average year for Brunello, definitely not to be compared with the 1999 vintage, but still the wine held its own. The thick legs remained long after we swirled the glass of ruby red wine. The perfumes were not to powerful, but elegant and delicate. Ripe red fruit aromas like rasberry and cherry, mixed with black pepper spices, balsamic, aloe and bayleaf. The alcohol content was definitely a bit high for the wine itself and carried through on the tongue along with the fruits. Dry, and still incredibly young for a 2000, it needed time to open and was actually better a day later. Delicate and fresh, I think it would probably be better on its own instead of being paired with food.

Raboso 2004, by La Salute

The raboso, is one of the great reds, drank by the doges' of Venice. It doesn't seem to have made it out to the mainstream, but in the Veneto is reins supreme. Typically, it is drank young and often from the tap, but Cantina La Salute vineyards age their raboso and the result is amazing! For Christmas we shared with our friends a magnum of their 2004 vintage. It was a dense purply red, which spilled out and array of intense odors. Dark red and purple fruits, balsamic, licquorish, black pepper and some what christmas smelling with the pine and spices. It has a super fruity taste and smell, making it also slightly sweet, for two reasons. First, because the grape is slightly aromatic and fruity in itself, and second, because La Salute leaves the grapes on the vines until the first frost, leaving the grapes to dry out a bit consentrating the sugar. The wine was warm and velvety with a good freshness. Slightly salty, tannic and spicy with rich strawberry and pepper tastes. Just so you know, the 2004 was a better year then the 2005. This is typical for almost all of Italy, so if you want a really good wine the 2004 is one of Italys best. If interested La Salute offers a large variety of wines at an extremely reasonable price. Let me know if you are interested to stop by and stock up!

Edo's by Villa Canestrari

Seems like everyone is trying to make sparkling wine out of some different kind of grape these days. A few of these Champagne styled wines are incredible, others, not so much. Our friends from Villa Canestrari are one of the vineyards who have pulled it off. 'Edo's', named after the latest member of the family, is a beautiful antique rose colored wine made from the corvina grape- the main grape used to produce amarone! The numerous bubbles are so tiny they are barely visable, but they tickle your tongue to let you know they are there. The nose is soft and delicate, with small hints of the woody tannins which come from the skin of the grape. (This is how the wine becomes red!) Touches of flower and peach aromas blend with white chocolate and for some reason I am reminded of a jam filled croissant. The taste is slightly sweet, like a peach, but extremely fresh and slightly tannic. A slight acidic aftertaste lingers on my tongue, something typical to most champagne styled wines. Along with the bubbles, it dries my mouth preparing me for the next sip, or perhaps something to eat... a good brie maybe?

Mezzosecolo by Geretto-Merk

Other than the famed Valpolicella, the Veneto producers two other great red wines, who unfortuanatly do not have the recognition they deserve. The Refosco and Raboso are just as important as the former wine mentioned and recently we have come by a few vineayrds who have gone above and beyond with the quality of these indiginous reds. Vigne Vecchie, made by the Geretto/Merk company (also mentioned in the article before this one), is a reserve made from the vineyard's oldest vines. In their best years, they make Mezzosecolo, from the same vines and made similarly. After a long maceration period in cement vats, the wine ages 2 years in large oak barrels, then another 14 months in small barrels (barrique) slightly larger barrels (tonneaux). It is an amazing, long lasting wine, full of flavor and deserves to be put on the map.
Mezzosecolo, the name which represents the 50 years that Geretto has been making refosco, is a wine with a thick ruby red with a granite-orange colored rim. It has intense aromas of berries, plums, black pepper, tobacco, suede, green pepper, and alcohol- just the right amount. Rustic and woody, the taste is round and just as intense. Tannic, jammy and warm, with a slight sweetness from the fruits. We drank a bottle from 2001, but this wine could easily last for another 5-10 years unopened. It is surprisingly fresh for a wine picked from grapes over a decade old. Full and balanced, we finished the magnum sized bottle in no time. Powerful and important, but not overbearing or too heavy, it pairs nicely with wild meats or aged cheeses. On a trip to Venice? Find out who sells it, or visit them directly at their vineyard.

'The Confidence' is not the only refosco.

The Confidence, by Geretto

The Geretto/Merk brothers have come out with 2 new wines to add to their collection. A white and red named, 'The Confidence', were created to stay within the budget of what we are able to spend in these times, and of course, both wines are made from grapes typical to the area between Friuli and Veneto. Let's talk first about the white, a Pinot Grigio. A strong, clear yellow, with 12% alcohol. An intense bouquet of aromas opened up right away once the bottle was poured, the most obvious of which were chamomile and a smell which reminded me of cake batter. With further sniffs we also found a varity of fruits like pineapple, manderin and guava and hints of herbs, maybe sage or lemon balm. Easy to drink, the wine was very round and warm. It seemed like it had more then 12% alcohol and I think it would make a better winter white than summer. Simple and pleasant, I think a good pairing would be with a meatloaf (before the tomato sauce) or a fatty shell fish like scallops. The red, a Refosco, is also an easy drinking wine for lighter foods. A deep purple-red color, seen through a transparent bottle, the aromas were just as intense as those of the pinot grigio. Fruity, with smells mainly from berries, it has a slight sweetness, which comes probably from the fruit; light, fun and young. These characteristics carried through to the taste, creating a light, drinkable wine with a slight sweetness to it. I think it could have used a bit more alcohol, creating a better balance between the parts. Better with food, a good salami works perfectly or perhaps grilled ribs or sausage.
