Cardenal Cisneros, Pedro Ximenz

So I know this may sounds weird, but I like layovers. I mean as long as I don't have to wait more than 3 hours in an airport, I enjoy looking around and tasting little things found in that particular country. On our last layover, with 3 hours to loose, we chowed on a few tapas and then passed by the food and wine store to pick up a bottle Pedro Ximenez in the Madrid airport. Cardenal Cisneros produces a wonderfully smooth and rich Pedro Ximenez sherry that tastes almost like your drinking raisins. A dark syrupy brown with long thick legs which left a film on the glass. Hints of brown sugar, mint, dried fig and apricot made this wine light and refreshing. The taste was definitely super sweet but not unbearable. It coated our mouth and warmed out throats, just like a good sherry should. We want something pairable that can balance out the sweetness so a semi-sweet dry desert would be your best bet, like dry sugar cookies or Italian pastries.

Pedro Ximenez Osborne 17%

Americans in general are not as big on desert wines as say Italy, and tend to drink more alcoholic drinks like Cognac or Rum after dinner. But for those of us who don't have the stomach for such strong drinks there are many other choices.
A Sherry called Pedro Ximenez was our drink of choice one night out in Manhattan at a little tapas bar called Tierra on Seventh Ave. Pedro Ximenez, the sweetest of all sherrys, is made usually from about 90% of the same named grape and is mostly unknown to non-winos. With 17% alcohol the taste and color is somewhat similar to that of a Port wine, but a bit sweeter and without the tannins. The particular brand we had was by Osborne, a well known company who makes all types of sherrys. This PX was a mix of three grapes, Palomino (the main grape in all other sherrys), Muscadel and of course Pedro Ximenez. A deep ruby red with a high consistancy, it was intense and persistant with hints of red berries. Mature prunes, cinnamon, cloves, liquorish and vanilla. Sweet on the tongue but not overly so, soft and definatly alcoholic. It did however lack on the freshness and sapidity. The small glass cost $10, while the bottle in a store near us cost $13. In NY that isnt that bad. Do I dare say I miss Italy?
Vote 79/100

Marco Sara

Would like to appologize for the lack of posts lately but we were busy moving to New York! Im sure as most of you know, moving is not easy, and since we are renting out apartment in Venice, we had to prepare all that too! Ok, so enough of our stories and onto the wine!
Through our friend at Mondosapore, we were introduced to
Azienda Vinicola di Marco Sara. A young and promenent producer from the hills of Friuli, they are in fact the winners of the 'Menzione Eccellenza 2008' or in english the Mentino of excellence; for the Tigullio wine meeting in the Palazzo Ducale in Genova. This group uses only grapes indigenous to Fruili and makes only desert wines. The three we had the opportunity to try were:
Muffis dal Sis- 90% Tocai Friulano and 10% Moscato grapes with noblie rot
Verdis dal Sis- 100% Verduzzo grapes (also used to make Ramandolo DOCG)
Piculit dal Sis- 100% from Picolit grapes
All three were excellent. Typical perfumes of dried or candied apricot and fig and spices like cinnamon or cloves. The picolit, probably the more famous of the three, was the last we had and maybe the cleanest. Slightly mineral, sweet but not overbaringly so, fresh and easy to drink. The Verdis was a little more bitter and heavier than the rest, which is typical of the grape. Probably best with aged cheeses like parmagian because of its apricot marmalade/honey-like qualities. The Muffis, the first we had, was also quite fresh and intense, but a bit short in its persistance. Different yet similar to the more famous moldy wine sauternes, I think I would recommend this Muffis to anyone who loves an delightful an delicious desert wine without pretences.
Vote for all three-94/100

Vignalta one of the few producers in the Colli Euganei region in the Province of Padova, uses rare grapes types to create fantastic wines. This hilly region (really just two or three small hills) were formed 30 million years ago from an under the sea volcano. The mixture of lava and sea life left the ground in the area, rich in minerals and perfect for coltivating grapes. Almost all the grapes are white like 'Sirio' a dry moscato and 'Agno Casto' a Pinot Bianco made only during favorable years. Reds include Rosso Riserva, a typical bordolese cut; 'Gemola' the companies main focus, and a special desert wine called ''Il Nero' made from the extremely rare Moscato di Parenzo grape. Parenzo, the city, is found on the Croatian penninsula of Istria, and the grape was probably imported at some point in time from the area. The wine reminds us of a similar Moscato di Scanzo grape found in Lombardia. Both leave the grapes longer on the vine to dry out the water inside the grape and therefor consentrating the sugars. Aromas were that of chocolate, cinnamon, spices and matured fruits. The taste reminded us of something similar to a port wine, with a good persistance and velvetness on the tongue. Definatly enjoyable since port is one of my prefered wines. We had it with a duncan hines birthday cake, but surely can be drunk with other deserts or aged cheeses.

Voto 87/100.

Malvasia delle Lipari Riserva Hauner

Another interesting bottle we tried from the Sicilian world is that produced on the island of Lipari which is situated on the archipelagos of Eolie. Well known for the Malvasia that grows there, we decided one by the Azienda Agricola Hauner. The founder is an artist from Brescia named Carlo Hauner and has actually created himself the design on each of the labels.
Malvasia in general are naturally sweeter since they are considered aromatic grapes, and often because of this they are made into desert wines. This bottle is an example of that. A golden yellow color tells us it was sun dried before pressed and its consistancy that it has high levels of glycerine. Exotic fruits and vegetables fill the glass with their perfumes, and the mineral and fresh erbe scents help us realized its freshness. The taste is just as inviting with its intensity and softness and lingers on our tongue until the next sip. Perfectly sweet, a piece of aged or blued cheese would go well for desert.
Vote 86/100

Voto 86/100.

Moscato D'Asti e Verduzzo

After our dinner at Ca' Nostra, there with friends for a birthday party, we moved on desert and our choice of desert wines. Moscato d'Asti or Verduzzo passito? I had both! Moscato is one of the four aromatic grapes- Moscato, Malvasia, Gewurstraminer and Brachetto. Their aromaticy makes them all slightly sweet, and therefor, for the most part they are used for desert wines. Moscato d'Asti DOCG from Piedmonte is one of the most loved desert wines in Italy mainly because its not over bareing nor is it syrupy like typical sweet wines. Many are lightly sparkling and last nights was no exception. Straw colored, aromatic, young and refreshing with perfumes that continue when drunk of carmalized apricots, peaches and delicate flowers. Light in alcohol and in body its a perfect wine with most fruit infused deserts. Verduzzo passito from Bosco Del Merlo on the other hand is completly different in that it becomes sweet by leaving the grapes to dry out in the sun after they are picked. The grape Verduzzo is also the main grape in the velvety Ramandolo DOCG. Intense and persistant in its smells and tastes, Verduzzo when passito is golden colored, lightly syrupy wine. Cooked apples, mature peaches and figs and dried glicine and acacia flowers, it pairs well with dry pastries and marmalades.

Moscato D'Asti o Verduzzo passito?? Io ho bevuto entrambi.
