Moscato 'Dorato', Travaglino

This wine was definitely a surprise. Normally I'm not a fan of moscato, but this one by Travaglino was excellent. Slightly sparkling and with only 5,5% alcohol, it was light and refreshing, with just the right amount of sugar, so as not to be overbearing. Travaglino, my friends from the Oltrepò Pavese, have many wines, and are most known for their Champagne styled sparklers. This bottle is one of their simpler DOC wines, similar to their young pinot nero and pinot grigio. I really wasnt expecting anything from it. We opened the bottle simply called Dorato, with a few friends over desert and everyone loved, asking where they could buy it! Slight aromas of mint and golden apple, lemon and peach. The light golden colored moscato can be drunk alone or paired with fruity tarts or dry Italian pastries.

Adanti, Sagrantino Passito

I am a huge fan of port wine. But in the past year or two I've come across a few desert wines, mainly 'passito' wine, thats really made me smile. The Sagrantino Passito by Adanti is one of them. It is made from 100% sagrantino grapes, grown typically in this area of Umbria, Italy, which after harvest are left out on racks to dry and shrivel in the sun. The evaporation of the water from within the grape causes the sugar level to rise. When fermentation of the wine begins, and the sugars transform into alcohol, there will be a higher level of alcohol then found in 'dry' wines, leaving still enough sugar for a sweeter taste. The liquid seems thicker and coats your mouth. This passito has a dark red and purple color, and incredibly enough smells like tires when first opened. Hints of cherries and blueberries, rose and viola, flint or sulfur, are smells from which you cant find in the 'regular' sagrantino wine, combine with wood, vanilla and marinated cherries. After two years in oak barrels, the wine becomes so juicy, intense, round, and incredibly persistent and elegant with time, but still a real powerhouse.
A definite favorite.

Maestoso

Sutto Ultimo

In the area of Treviso, a star is born. Located about 40 kilometers north of Venice, this terratory is not really known outside of the Veneto and really only produces international wines. Sutto, who has 50 acres and produces many different wines from Merlot to Pinot Grigio has put a mouth watering desert wine, made from the Veruzzo and Sauvignon grapes. Ultimo, created from late harvested wines is a golden yellow wine with a nose full of aromas like fig, honey, almond and even a hint of white chocolate. It is elegant and soft in the mouth and not overpowerly sweet- it still holds its freshness, which for a sweet wine is sometimes hard to achieve. A good intensity and persistance. Great when paired with fruit cakes and othe deserts- we had ours with a peach champagne mouse.

Donnhoff Riesling Auslese 7.5% vol.

On a trip to an upper east side wine shop for a tasting, we came across a bottle of Riesling, from the Nahe region in southwest Germany. We found it in the desert area mixed with others after dinner wines and thought it looked interesting. Riesling, is the principle grape in this country, where winters are long and cold and sun exposure is short. In Nahe, these grapes are grown alongside the river Reno, giving the vines the nutrients they need to survive. The terrain is diverse and rich of quartz which it receives from its branching streams; the Idarbch, Kyrbach, Hahnenbach and Simmerbach.
The classification of German wines can be quite confusing too, since they are rated by the quantity of sugar in the grape. This particular Riesling is an Auslese, which means that the grapes were harvested late in the season, and there is an elevated amount of sugar (but not much compared to Icewein!) The amount of alcohol is 7%, which is low due to the low amount of sun. Getting to the 'gustazione' of the wine itself, the Riesling della Azienda Donnhoff is a clear, vivascious straw color, with perfumes of golden apples, pinapple, grapefruit and a note of fresh flowers, musk and sage. The taste was obviously sweet, but not overpoweringly so. Medium softness, low heat, and higher amounts of acidity and minerality. Intense and persistent, it would be great with German treats like a Danish or struddle or a classic American dish like apple pie.

Chateau De Malle, Gran Cru Classé, Sauterns.

One of the most praised desert wines, Sauternes is a product of Bordeaux in the province of Graves. The particular bottle we're talking about today is a Grand Cru classé from Chateau de Malle, year 2002. Made from 69% Semillion, 28% Sauvignon and 3% Muscadelle, it is a deliciously sweet wine made possible by Botrytis Cinerea. This 'nobile mold' eats away at the grapes causing them to shrivel but at the same time, concentrating the amount of sugar within each one. At this and most Chateau that create sauternes the harvest is done by hand as to choose only the grapes with enough 'rot,' before continuing with the winemaking process. An amber color tells us its been in barrique and the dried apricot, fig, and raisin smells remind us its a desert wine. Although not one of the 'best' its still an interesting bottle. Pairing it with gorganzola was heavenly and a great end to a meal.

87/100.
