'Aperitif Bistro and Bar'

Wine bars and restaurants don't seem to go over so well in Rockville Centre, so I was skeptical about the lastest arrival, Aperitif. I heard both good and bad reviews, mainly about the waitstaff needing to get itself together. Non the less, I was curious about finding a restaurant on Long Island that had good wine as well as good food. Modernly decorated with the resemblance of a French Bistro we were greeted warmly at the door and seated. The wine list was mainly French (duh) but overall interesting with a wide range of wines. I ordered a syrah/tannat/merlot rosè, making the waiter promise me that it wasnt sweet! I was tempted, however, to order one of their flights for $13, which offers three wines- a great way for people to learn about the many styles and grape types from France. Since I find tasting many plates to be better than having just one, I was also excited to see that this place has a 'tapas' menu, from which we ordered most of the food- a white bean and articoke dip, served within an articoke which could be eaten afterword; lamb sausage, which was good but personally was not my favorite; zucchini pancake, served with yogurt sauce; trio of tartar- salmon, tuna and fluke; seared tuna with seaweed salad; and a flatbread topped with caramelized onion, gruyère and prosciutto. From the specials menu we also ordered a gnocchi in a wonderfully buttery and garlicy sauce topped with large prawns and a risotto with grilled scallops. We were all more than surprised by how wonderful the food was, stuffing ourselves until the last drop. Oh, and did I mention that the bread is out of this world? How anyone could speak badly about this restaurant Im not sure, so I hope people look past what Zagat says and go try Aperitif for themselves. I think we've finally found a wine bar that deserves its spot in RVC.

Finding a good restuarant is hard enough, but when you find one that costs next nothing, your day is made! In a small town near Mogliano, the restaurant Vecia Osteria da Rosa e Baffo offers great steaks at a really great price. Different cuts of meat like the filet or the 800gr ribeye are some of the simpler things on the list. Beef strogonof, horse or ostrich steaks or a creamy pepper sauce poured over a 300gr steak, there is something for everyone. Antipastas include sliced roast beef, regular or duck prociutto, bresaola rolled with fresh cheese and scallion, and polenta with sauteed mushrooms and freshly slices sopressa. First courses offered are gnocchi with either a spinach, gorganzola, speck and nut sauce or duck ragu or homemade pasta with either deer bolognese or horse, brie and arugola sauce. Some of these dishes may seem weird to the non-Italian but its country styled meals all the way. The portions are generous and filling although the service can be a bit slow. Four of went out for dinner and spent only 70 euros! Total! In days like these a good bargain is everything and this Osteria is a great deal.

Ambiente tradizionale e gioviale.
Qualita' prezzo a livelli stratosferisci.
Indimenticabile

Emilio Sartor, Campo di Prà at Agnoletti restaurant

A rare find, this wine is great! This red from Colli Asolani near Padova was recomended by our waiter (and owner) of the Agnoletti restaurant.
This small region is still unknown to many people even Italians and even to people who live within an hour of it, but, it produces many great wines and even became a DOCG recently for its prosecco. Founded in 1957, az.agricola Emilio Sartor located between the villages of Venegazzu and Montello, is a small family owned vineyard full of surprises. We tried their Campo di Prà which was a deep, rich red, full of powerful, long lasting aromas of red fruits, viola, pepper, mint, cinnamon, aloe and balsalmic with perfect amounts of alcohol and wood. Really well rounded. The taste was just as good as the smell, super juicy and elegant. We were surprised that such a great wine came from such a small area and wonder why people always tend to think of Tuscany or Piedmonte as having the best wines. There's a lot out there to learn and drink!

While we were being given our second course, we tried another bottle from the same area. Rosso di Milio by Casal Paolin wasn't as eye popping as the Sartor but still a really good wine. Much younger and purple in color, it didnt stand up to the second course. Dried fruit perfumes, cloves and most of a smell of freshly chopped wood. A big mouthed wine full of sapidity, acidity and youth.

Buono.

Osteria a Marcon (Ve)

Often we bring people to this delicious restaurant in the center of Marcon, the food is always good, and so is the wine and the service. Osteria uses fresh fruits and vegetables and offer an array of appetizers like baccala, raw scampi and my choice the eggplant tower. Grilled slices of eggplant and tomato with melted mozzarella and fresh basil drizzle. Most pastas, if not all all are homemade, giving them a softness that absorbs the sauce poured on top. My cousin tried the tagliolini with crab and zucchini, which was an interesting and delicate and filling. Paolo and I had the roast veal, accompanied by roasted potatoes and artichokes. We opted for Due Santi by Zonta as wine, which is red from the area around Bassano di Grappa. Granite colored with ruby highlights; the fruitiness was represented both on the noise and on the tongue, a bit too much alcohol, but over time the bottle opened nicely. The dishes were a bit delicate for the wine, so I wouldnt recommened this as a good pairing, but overall everything was great.
Vote 89/100

Vittoria e Lamborghini

Becoming an Italian citizen is much easier than becoming and American, but still we had to celebrate. Lunch at one of Paolos favorite places, Vittoria, in Campalto, is what we decided on, with a nice bottle of wine. Vittoria is famous for their meat. They wheel around a cart with two trays, one full of roasted meat like lamb chops, veal, meatloaf, etc and the other broiled meat, stuffeed pig, tongue and veal. Very good but heavy. Good for a winter meal! Still i decided on steak tartar. We both had appetizers as well- i had an omlette with porcini mushrooms and Paolo had 'castraure' a plate typical of the area, with consists of small artichokes, grown on the island of Sant' Erasmo in the Venetian lagoon, chopped and covered with sliced parmagian and olive oil. The most interesting part of the meal was our wine. The owner recommended a red from Umbria produced by Lamborghini. Don't they make cars I thought? Yes, and very fast cars, so honestly how good could their wine be? But we took a chance, given that the price was excellent at 20 euros, and we where pleasantly surprised. A blend of Sangiovese, Cigliegiolo and Merlot, it had a ruby red color, still young, and 13% alcohol. A bouquet of cinnamon, liquorish, dried viola flowers, balsamic vinegar, sweet tobacco and thyme; and on the palate, it was round, soft, not over excessive in any area, a good balance of tannins, spices, freshness, minerality, intensity and persistence.
Vote 88/100

Voto 88/100

Agriturismo La Prediletta a Motta di Livenza di Treviso

On a roadtrip to the Lison-Pramaggiore area near Treviso for a wine tasting, we decided to stay for dinner and look for an agriturismo since we were starving! Down the road from where we were we spotted a little hand written sign that proclaimed 'restaurant open'- perfect! A large brick farmhouse stood at the end of the road... the type of homes that I love about Italy. We walked in, sat down and listened the specials. Not a large choice, but interesting to say the least. Between the four of us we shared an anitpasta plate of frittata, baked bread stuffed with sausage, a spinach and cheese square, sauteed radiccio and onion on a crostino and home made pancetta. For the main course I had roasted pheasant, a personal favorite, Paolo had rabbit and our friends chose trippa and musetto (musetto is like a sausage from pig meat typical to the area of emilia-romagna and trippa is nerves in a tomato sauce). I cant say I really enjoyed the wine- after all it was just table wine from the area, but the couple who ran the joint were super cute and even showed us around the farm after dinner. Three rooms are available to rent for the night and in a larger room they offer daycare and play time for children. Great idea!

Ombre Rosse

To celebrate Valentines Day, Paolo and I decided to go to a restaurants we had been to only once before, Enoteca Ombre Rosse in the city of San Trovaso near Treviso. Claudio, the owner, is well known for his large collection of wine, but also for his character- While waiting for our table to be ready, he offered us fresh glass of Pinot Bianco of the Azienda Drius di Cormons from the Fruili Venezia Giulia region. An interesting, well rounded, fuller bodied white, good for winter. The restaurant is very welcoming and I can only guess used to be the ground floor of someones home, after noticing details of where a fireplace used to be or the arrangement of walls. Theres a garden turned seating area outside great for warm summer nights paired with cool sparklers. Once seated we ordered a bottle of Chianti Classico by the Fontodi group, 2006 and checked out the menu. I choose an Insalata di Burrata (my favorite mozzarella) and a steak tartar for the main course; meanwhile Paolo went with the pasta fagiolo for an appetizer and guancine di vitello (or veal cheek) with polenta. Tasting our wine, we discovered that 70% of the ground used to create the grapes is biologic and creates a wine with 14% alcohol andof grand quality. It is still young, so the color was purple going towards ruby adn showed many legs. Fruity smells like rasberry, cherry and strawberry, with touches of violets, graphite, cloves, licquorish and anice. It was fresh and mineral, dry, warm and soft, with a large amount of tannin. Although my cold held me back from tasting everything perfectly, we both really enjoyed the food, atmosphere and wine.

Paradou restaurant in NY

In times like these, stores and restaurants a like are doing anything possible to get or keep clients. Sales, deals, shows, discounts- you name it. So when we choose a little place called Paradou in the meatpacking district of New York City, we were shocked when we saw how hard it was to actually get the discount they promised.
We had originally decided to go there mainly because we had passed by, thought it different and we liked the slogan- 'We're not fancy, but our food is' or something like that, and they were right. At the end of the meal, I went to the bathroom seeing for the first time their list of 'deals' and 'specialty' nights. 'Dec 8th, free bottle of wine.' With that, it was written to make a reservation or tell you waiter and use this code. What are we in some brothel in the 1920's I thought? Needing a password? But still I thought that getting our half liter of wine free would be great (especially since it was so expensive and really not that good) but when I asked the waiter he said it was by reservation only. Well that wasn't what it said on the list- so I asked the manager and she said oh no you must be on the mailing list. Thats funny, never heard of the mailing list before and it definatly wasn't written on the sheet of discounts and deals. So really did they want to give anyone a free bottle of wine? I doubt it. They claim they want to help out the people until the DOW reaches 12000? Just a ploy to make you think that there are some decent people out there trying to help out the unemployed citizens of NY. One would think that if you want people to come back or share their happy thoughts about a restaurant with others they would have discounted the bottle either way, but they didnt. So here's our nasty thoughts on the place. Bland overpriced food, in a quasi dive looking atmosphere, without hardly any heat and they probably use cheap, crappy wine for their 'quarter' and 'half' bottles since they never showed or poured you the wine from the original bottle (something unheard of in Europe). But most of all, the fact that a place offers you one thing and doesnt give it to you is absoluty distasteful.

Orrore !!! Ragazzi assolutamente da evitare questo locale.
BAD BAD BAD

Umbria II

After one of the best nights sleep we've had in awhile, we woke, opened the window and took in a deep breath of fresh mountain air. A new day with new hopes and expectations. A warm cappucino and homemade cakes were waiting for us when we came downstairs and as usual we ate too much. The owner, Angelo, had told us the night before that his wife, Assunta, had another restaurant in the next town over of Bevagna, so we set off to dine at her small boutique. Her place 'La Bottega di Assu' reminded me of a cafe in Paris or maybe in the Village; walls covered in fotos and stacks of books on wine and food pilled high on the floor. We sat outside, even though it was windy, and with a bottle of Grecante of Caprai, ate a wonderful bruscetta of fresh veggies and a drizzle of Umbrian oil. Paolo then had a soup, and for me, a pasta. The town was quiet, but still beautiful. After lunch we went to meet Andrea, the brazilian woman we booked our B&B for us. An artist who has been married and living in Umbria now for years, she showed us her studio of ceramic sculptures, located in the city of Foligno. Afterward, we walked through the city back towards our car and discovered a party. Every year around the beginning of September, the town recreates 'medival times.' The city is divided into parts, and they battle each other for honor. Dressed in traditional clothes they ride their horses through the city and with a jousting stick pick up rings hung throughout the town. The one with the most rings wins. We decided to join in the fun and entered the hall of the 'jousters' for dinner. Before dinner was over, a contest between some of the groups started up over who could drum better. A bit much, but we went home smiling. Upon arriving back at the B&B, we couldnt help but order another glass of sagrantino and some jambon from Spain. I think I must have gained 5 lbs already. We stayed up late talking to the waitress Paola about ideas for the future and of course our love of wine.

Adoro Montefalco!!!

Umbria Part I

To go back a bit in time, Ive been meaning to tell you all about our trip tp Umbria. Since our time in Puglia wasnt going as planned, we decided to make a change and go north to Umbria. On a recomondation from a friend, and our love of Sagrantino, we headed to a medival town call Montefalco, to stay for three nights in a bed and breakfast. After a 13 hour drive (yes you read correctly) we arrived in the city around 10 pm exhausted from everything. Our horrible mood changed as soon as we were greeted at our car by a woman who worked at the wine bar/restaurant at the B&B. A beautiful wall-in city made of stone with small alleyways reminding you of what times were like before cars. The place called Spirito di vino was amazing. We were brought up to our room (one of three) and melted into the bed. It was amazing. Clean, well put together and restored, we began to forget about our prior days. After a shower we headed downstairs for something to eat. Their menu was great. Typical Umbrian cusine with a choice of the best salami, proscuittos and cheese from all over Europe. 20 types of oils and a long wine line (including of course almost all of the Sagrantinos!) We opted for a cheese and proscuitto plate (duh) a tomato soup and a steak; to be washed down of course with a full bodied Sagrantino di Montefalco Azienda Tabarrini. Everything was delicious. After dinner we headed upstairs to bed, thanking our friends for helping us find this little jewel.

Ristoranti in Puglia

About a week before we left for New York, Paolo and I decided to take a little trip to the south and central parts of Italy. After seven hours of driving we arrived to the 'spur' of the boot of Italy called Gargano in the region of Puglia. We stayed in a town called Peschici, a city built on the top of a hill overlooking the Adriatic. The water was crystal clear and the rustic landscape was an image that took us back in time. An area which has grown as a tourist vacation spot only within the last 30 years, Peschici is still learning how to cope with the flow of people and the modern world. However, we did find two wonderful restaurants. The first, Fra Stephano offers typical fish dishes from the area in a homestyle fashion. We ate a delightful eggplant parm appetizer and an even more delicious 'alici in olio' or mini sardines cooked in a typical clay pot in boiling oil and pepperoncini. For our main dish, a grilled red snapper... yum! For drinks, a carafe of homemade white pugliese wine (verdecca) with a glass of desert moscato (also homemade) offered to us after dinner. All of this for under 50 euro... a definate steal.
Second night, new place to eat, a place written up as one of best new restaurants of the south. Porta di basso is a bit more expensive that what we had expected but quite good. Chef Domenico Cilenti uses a base of fish for his dishes and creates clever twists on traditional plates. The meal we had consisted of a tasting of antipasta including a pecorini ricotta omlette, a stuffed mussel, carpaccio of scorfano, sardine in eggplant and others. A braised scorfano in tomato broth for the main course and sorbet to close the deal. The best part of the place, was the view from the terrace, at which you are sitting on a ledge of rock looking straight down! I would definatly recommend arriving in time for sunset and staying long enough to watch the fishing boats floating out at see.

Good 'international' cuisine can be hard to find in Italy especially since the Italians are so proud of their own. But, once and awhile you can stumble on something really great. Sushi Su located just outside the city wall of Padovais real traditional japanese. Although the menu is not as extensive as what you'd find in restaurant in New York, or Japan for that matter, there are mainly items worth trying. Sushi and Sashimi plates, tuna or salmon tartar. Traditional miso or kani (crab) soup (tastes just like what we had in Kyoto) for cooler nights... or even hot ones, like we did since we were there in only last week. Not one for raw fish? They have Terriyaki and Tempura. We orderd plates from the later. Perfectly fried spring rolls, tempura-ed veggies, scampi and lobster. Everything was moist, tender and absolutly deliscious. Of course with all of this we needed something equally as good but nothing that would have over powered the delicateness of the fish. Whites naturally where our choice, three in total, two were from our ever reliable Jermann from the the hills of Fruili; Sauvignon Blanc and il Vinae, the second being a blend of Ribolla, Reisling and Malvasia. The wine list/menu is actually quite good, including some sake of course, and layed out newspaper style on transparent paper. But thats not the only design notable. The restaurant itself is quite interesting with lowered tables, green doors, dangling ropes and odd-shaped walls. Located on the second floor (su meaning up in italian) and therefor giving its name, it has a sister restautant called Sushi Gu (or down in Italian) and a few others located all within driving ditance. If ever in Italy and in need of an anti-italian fix.... go to sushi su.

Morimoto New York City

While visiting friends and family in NY the first two weeks of July we had the fortune of going to Morimoto's restaurant in the meatpacking district. For those of you who are not familiar with the 'Iron Chef,' listen up! Morimoto has restaurants all over of the world from Japan to Philadelphia to NY. The super trendy interior designs and his nouveau japanese dishes are greatly appriciated by celebs and peasents alike- although if you are on a budget, buying his cook book might be a better option. Appetizers of tempura shrimp in wasabi or korean sauce, pulled pork, lobster balls, gyoza and tuna tartar (my favorite) where a great way to start off the meal. Paired with a Sauvignon Blanc from France, the crisp and light accents of the wine didn't distract you from the subtleness of the fish in each dish. Roasted duck with plum wine sauce, seabass over tomato and eggplant with lemongrass juice and of course a sushi/sashimi plate where next in line and shared with a bottle of Sancerre. After dinner we ordered a few deserts, mainly all based with chocolate, but as for me (a non chocolaholic) I had a 40yr old Port which completed the deliciously splendid evening.
