Bramato Insolia Cantine Vinci

Maybe it was our bad luck, or maybe this wine really just sucked. Either way, since its not often that we drink an Insolia, we'll have to go by what we are told. The producer of this indiginous Sicilian wine, Bramato Cantine Vinci writes that the color should be a muted pale yellow- first mistake- it was a dark almost golden color. Second mistake- the profumes were definatly oxidized, but still had floral and fruity hints, which they claimed it would. Maybe this is the reason that they use this grape also for making Marsala, along with Grillo and Cataratto. The famous desert wine, known for its oxidized taste and odor, would have been a better choice than the Insolia alone.

In bocca confermava quello espresso in precedenza nell'esame olfattivo.
Mi dispiace molto.

Morellino di Scansano DOCG Tenute Frescobaldi 2001

A DOCG from Tuscany, the name Morellino from a race of horses that were used to pull carriages, in the hills along the city of Scansano. Made from at least 85% sangiovese, it has a good structure an rich amount of tannins. The bottle we had is Santa Maria 2001, from the famous Frescobaldi group. It has a pretty high amount of alcohol at 13.5% but its not overbearing. Its fruity and velvety, an intense red color, and a just right amount of freshness and sapidity. If you're looking for a good Tuscan wine without the pricetag of a Brunello, then Morellino is for you. Goes great with local meats like roasted pig, duck, and wild boar (one of my personal favorites); as well as aged pecorino cheeses and cured salumi's.
Vote 86/100.

Prezzo contenuto.

Don Antonio dell'Azienda Morgante, Nero D'Avola

I'm not sure why, but for some reason, lately, I'm really into drinking south italian red wines. Maybe its the bad weather that keeps me away from whites and the desire to move from the repetative, but I am steering myself toward the rich and robust wines of the south. One of the most important of which is Nero d'Avola, THE red wine of Sicily. With the temperature seeming more like fall, and never ending rain, we were recommended a bottle of Don Antonio from the Azienda Morgante by our waiter- and owner- at Beccofino in Mogliano, Veneto; and since we were enjoying meat dishes a strong, full-bodied wine was the logical choice. The deep ruby color and nose-opening aromes made us smile. Slight spices of pepper, cinnamin, cloves and small dark fruits paired nicely with the elegant tannins and created a long lasting, velvety mix in my mouth.

Great!!

Chateau De Malle, Gran Cru Classé, Sauterns.

One of the most praised desert wines, Sauternes is a product of Bordeaux in the province of Graves. The particular bottle we're talking about today is a Grand Cru classé from Chateau de Malle, year 2002. Made from 69% Semillion, 28% Sauvignon and 3% Muscadelle, it is a deliciously sweet wine made possible by Botrytis Cinerea. This 'nobile mold' eats away at the grapes causing them to shrivel but at the same time, concentrating the amount of sugar within each one. At this and most Chateau that create sauternes the harvest is done by hand as to choose only the grapes with enough 'rot,' before continuing with the winemaking process. An amber color tells us its been in barrique and the dried apricot, fig, and raisin smells remind us its a desert wine. Although not one of the 'best' its still an interesting bottle. Pairing it with gorganzola was heavenly and a great end to a meal.

Being that we live in the Veneto, we are fortunate to have our pick amoungst the best of the Prosecco there is. One of these is a Prosecco Brut by Adriano Adami, 'Bosco di Gica.' A DOC from Valdobbiadene, the prosecco region, this spumante is great with an antipasta of fish or veggies or even as an apertif to be drunk by itself. A brut means that the sugar levels are quit low, less than 15grams and it is a little less aromatic then most prosecco's. A good persistance, both in taste and in perlage. The small, gentile bubbles of CO2 will tickle your tongue, while pears, apples, wild flowers and vegatables make up the well rounded bouquet. Due to the colder winters of the Veneto, the grape takes on a grand freshness and minerality. For sure an bottle of prestige, especially for the small price.

Ortrugo from Colli Piacentini "Sur Lie"

A very interesting, and surely not well-known wine, Ortrugo, from Colli Piacentini, the hills near Bologna, is actually quite good. The particular vineyard we tried is Croci, Tenuta Vitivinicola and their particularity is an Ortrugo 'sur lie' or with yeast left inside the bottle- making the wine sparkling. The grapes are hand picked, carefully choosing the best and making sure each in intact before maceration. A strong yellow color, aromatic and complex in its smell, the rareness of the wine alone was really intriguing. Dry, soft and structured; harmonious, refreshing and fantastically effervescent, the bottle was drunk in no time. Perfect for a hot, humid day, with or without some appetizers, if you can find this exquisite bottle, buy at least three!

Gewurtztraminer d'Alsazia Lucien Albrecht

Last night while out with friends we stopped by one of our favorite places in Venice for a drink- Osteria ai Rusteghi. Located near San Bartolomeo (thats near the Rialto bridge for those who dont know) its deliciously Venezian, with only cold paninis, salami and cheese plates and great, great wine. The son, Giovanni and his mom are both sommeliers and owners of this bar and would to talk to you about their selections. What was recommended to us was a Gewurztraminer from Alsace, France. Lucien Albrecht is the vineyard and is probably more known for its Reisling than Gewurstraminer, and grows many other grape types like Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, Sylvaner, and Pinot Noir. When it comes to France its hard to go wrong. Every part of the counrty of the country is unique and Alsace is no different. There can even find documents of the presence of winemakers, like the Albrecht family in the city of Thann, dating back to 1425. Not bad.
Getting back on track, the Gewurstraminer we tried is produced along the Rhin River in the Bas area (which happens to be the north part of the river). Another 'aromatic' grape, although hardly made into a desert wine, it was a pale yellow but consistent and intense in its profumes of pineapple, papaya, grapefruit and banana. Not just fruity, it also was mineral, erbacous and lightly spicy. With first taste the flavors continue as well as freshness, sapidity and heat. By itself or with a meal its a definate must try.

Assaggiatelo!!!
