Sauvignon Blanc Oyster Bay 2006

Here in New York, you can find all types of bottles from all over the world. At our local wine shop in Astoria we picked up two: a Cannonao and a Sauvignon Blanc from Marlborough New Zealand. New Zealand is best known for its crisp SB's thanks to the cool year round weather. And, to add a bit of unknown information, Australia and NZ have put a new 'law' into affect asking wine producers to use plastic or glass corks instead of real cork due to high costs and possible extinction. The wine itself was a straw yellow and the perfume was your classic SB; grassy, vegetal, oregano, sage, white flowers, mainly from the wild and a touch of salt. On the palatte it was dry with medium softness and warm. The freshness and minerality fell after it was open a bit, while the intensity and persistance remained but with a bit of bitterness. For $10 the quality was worth the price and would be great with sushi or like food items.

Pedro Ximenez Osborne 17%

Americans in general are not as big on desert wines as say Italy, and tend to drink more alcoholic drinks like Cognac or Rum after dinner. But for those of us who don't have the stomach for such strong drinks there are many other choices.
A Sherry called Pedro Ximenez was our drink of choice one night out in Manhattan at a little tapas bar called Tierra on Seventh Ave. Pedro Ximenez, the sweetest of all sherrys, is made usually from about 90% of the same named grape and is mostly unknown to non-winos. With 17% alcohol the taste and color is somewhat similar to that of a Port wine, but a bit sweeter and without the tannins. The particular brand we had was by Osborne, a well known company who makes all types of sherrys. This PX was a mix of three grapes, Palomino (the main grape in all other sherrys), Muscadel and of course Pedro Ximenez. A deep ruby red with a high consistancy, it was intense and persistant with hints of red berries. Mature prunes, cinnamon, cloves, liquorish and vanilla. Sweet on the tongue but not overly so, soft and definatly alcoholic. It did however lack on the freshness and sapidity. The small glass cost $10, while the bottle in a store near us cost $13. In NY that isnt that bad. Do I dare say I miss Italy?
Vote 79/100

Voto 79.

Ristoranti in Puglia

About a week before we left for New York, Paolo and I decided to take a little trip to the south and central parts of Italy. After seven hours of driving we arrived to the 'spur' of the boot of Italy called Gargano in the region of Puglia. We stayed in a town called Peschici, a city built on the top of a hill overlooking the Adriatic. The water was crystal clear and the rustic landscape was an image that took us back in time. An area which has grown as a tourist vacation spot only within the last 30 years, Peschici is still learning how to cope with the flow of people and the modern world. However, we did find two wonderful restaurants. The first, Fra Stephano offers typical fish dishes from the area in a homestyle fashion. We ate a delightful eggplant parm appetizer and an even more delicious 'alici in olio' or mini sardines cooked in a typical clay pot in boiling oil and pepperoncini. For our main dish, a grilled red snapper... yum! For drinks, a carafe of homemade white pugliese wine (verdecca) with a glass of desert moscato (also homemade) offered to us after dinner. All of this for under 50 euro... a definate steal.
Second night, new place to eat, a place written up as one of best new restaurants of the south. Porta di basso is a bit more expensive that what we had expected but quite good. Chef Domenico Cilenti uses a base of fish for his dishes and creates clever twists on traditional plates. The meal we had consisted of a tasting of antipasta including a pecorini ricotta omlette, a stuffed mussel, carpaccio of scorfano, sardine in eggplant and others. A braised scorfano in tomato broth for the main course and sorbet to close the deal. The best part of the place, was the view from the terrace, at which you are sitting on a ledge of rock looking straight down! I would definatly recommend arriving in time for sunset and staying long enough to watch the fishing boats floating out at see.

Marco Sara

Would like to appologize for the lack of posts lately but we were busy moving to New York! Im sure as most of you know, moving is not easy, and since we are renting out apartment in Venice, we had to prepare all that too! Ok, so enough of our stories and onto the wine!
Through our friend at Mondosapore, we were introduced to
Azienda Vinicola di Marco Sara. A young and promenent producer from the hills of Friuli, they are in fact the winners of the 'Menzione Eccellenza 2008' or in english the Mentino of excellence; for the Tigullio wine meeting in the Palazzo Ducale in Genova. This group uses only grapes indigenous to Fruili and makes only desert wines. The three we had the opportunity to try were:
Muffis dal Sis- 90% Tocai Friulano and 10% Moscato grapes with noblie rot
Verdis dal Sis- 100% Verduzzo grapes (also used to make Ramandolo DOCG)
Piculit dal Sis- 100% from Picolit grapes
All three were excellent. Typical perfumes of dried or candied apricot and fig and spices like cinnamon or cloves. The picolit, probably the more famous of the three, was the last we had and maybe the cleanest. Slightly mineral, sweet but not overbaringly so, fresh and easy to drink. The Verdis was a little more bitter and heavier than the rest, which is typical of the grape. Probably best with aged cheeses like parmagian because of its apricot marmalade/honey-like qualities. The Muffis, the first we had, was also quite fresh and intense, but a bit short in its persistance. Different yet similar to the more famous moldy wine sauternes, I think I would recommend this Muffis to anyone who loves an delightful an delicious desert wine without pretences.
Vote for all three-94/100

On a night finally at home, we decided to relax with an incredable bottle of Carmignano wine by Tenuta di Capezzana, Villa di Capezzana Carmignano D.O.C.G, 2000. Before anything else I must explain the deliciousness of this wine... more than anything else it left hints of cinnamon both in smell and taste, and the bottle was finished quite fast. 80% Sangiovese and 20% Cab. Sauvignon, this wine is your typical Tuscan feast. So why is this one so good? In case you havent figured it out yet, the land has everything to do with it, and the land here is situated around Chianti and Montalcino. An intense ruby red color, with elgegant, distinguishable smells of fruits like black cherry, blueberry and blackberry and slightly spicy (like I said before of cinnamon and maybe cloves). First sip was slightly alcoholic but when it opened flavors of spices, balsamic, dark red fruits mixed well with the slightly mineral and tannicness of the wine. It was well structured, soft, dense and persistant. And at half the price of a Brunello it was even better!
Vote 89/100

On a recent trip to Barcelona, I was fortunate enough to try some wines hardly found outside of Spain. For example a Cava, Spain's version of Champagne, Sherry, and a few diffferent reds from Rioja and Duero. One Rioja I picked up in the airport on my flight back to Venice (since you cant bring liquids into the airport you're left with no choice but to buy while waiting for flights!) Marques de Arienzo, Rioja DOC is your typical in your face tempranillo. This Crianza 2004, was ruby red in color and after left to breath for a good period (in fact it tasted better the second day after I opened it) filled our noses with complex and intese cherry, leather, chocolate, cinnamon and tabacco flavors- the initial taste was bit alcoholy which is why its better left open for a bit. Warm, dry and extremly soft; salty, slightly tannic and fresh, the overall taste was pretty well balanced, but maybe a little short on persistance. Great with white or red meats or keep it true to tapas or your favorite Jambon (raw ham) and Manchango cheese, Yum!

Vignalta one of the few producers in the Colli Euganei region in the Province of Padova, uses rare grapes types to create fantastic wines. This hilly region (really just two or three small hills) were formed 30 million years ago from an under the sea volcano. The mixture of lava and sea life left the ground in the area, rich in minerals and perfect for coltivating grapes. Almost all the grapes are white like 'Sirio' a dry moscato and 'Agno Casto' a Pinot Bianco made only during favorable years. Reds include Rosso Riserva, a typical bordolese cut; 'Gemola' the companies main focus, and a special desert wine called ''Il Nero' made from the extremely rare Moscato di Parenzo grape. Parenzo, the city, is found on the Croatian penninsula of Istria, and the grape was probably imported at some point in time from the area. The wine reminds us of a similar Moscato di Scanzo grape found in Lombardia. Both leave the grapes longer on the vine to dry out the water inside the grape and therefor consentrating the sugars. Aromas were that of chocolate, cinnamon, spices and matured fruits. The taste reminded us of something similar to a port wine, with a good persistance and velvetness on the tongue. Definatly enjoyable since port is one of my prefered wines. We had it with a duncan hines birthday cake, but surely can be drunk with other deserts or aged cheeses.
Vote 87/100

Voto 87/100.
