Casa de Santa Eufemia, Tawny Port


While working at Vinitaly, a wine fair in Verona the first week of April, I had the fortune of meeting a distributor for Portugal wine named Marcio Ferreira (Vini Portugal). Although I found some of the wines to be a bit strong or alcoholic, a few stood out in my mind. The first, a tawny port by Casa de Santa Eufemia. With 19.5% in alcohol, I can still consider this port to be easier and fruiter than other tawnies Ive had in the past. Granite in color and obviously consistant it still remained transparent throughout. An overall intenseness with many smells like leather, tobacco, coffee and chocolate- which comes from its time in barrel- raisins, cinnamin, cloves, dried herbs, figs and prunes. Even the smoothness of the wine came through with just one sniff. Unfortuanatly if was a bit short in its persistancy and freshness, but the bouque showed in the taste which is something that doesnt often happen. The warm, velvety, milk chocolate filled my mouth while the strength of the alcohol filled my stomach. A robust wine great to pair with chocolaty desserts... an ooze cake perhaps?

Lavorando al Vinitaly ho avuto la fortuna di incontrare un distributore di vino del Portogallo Marcio Ferreira ( Vini Portugal). Sebbene pensi che i vini siano o troppo forti o alcolici, qualcuno di questi mi è piaciuto particolarmente. Il primo è un Tawny Port della Casa Sant'Eufemia con 19.5° alcolici lo considero ancora facile e fruttato di altri Tawnies che ho avuto in passato.Di colore granata consistente con una buona trasparenza; intensissimo e complesso di profumi di pelle, tabacco, caffe e cioccolata con sfumature di cannella, chiodi di garofano,erba secca, fichi e prugne. Sfortunatamente in bocca era un po' troppo corto in persistenza e freschezza. Positivo comunque il mio giudizio per quanto riguarda esame olfattivo.Il calore, la struttura vellutata con ricordi di cioccolata al latte ammaliava il mio palato ma la potenza dell'alcol colpiva il mio stomaco.
Un vino robusto da abbinare a dessert al cioccolato o a una torta ripiena di cioccolato fondente.
