Gerard Julien, Cotes de Nuits-Villages 1999- MOLD!

One of the most important aspects of wine is waiting. Waiting for the grapes to grow to have the exact ripeness and quantity of sugars and acids. Waiting for fermentation to take place. Waiting for the wine to mature in barrel and bottle. After all that waiting, to open a bottle of an excellent wine is a pleaseure. Until of course something goes wrong. Mold. Damn you mold! You always have to ruin such good wine! We've had a bottle of Burgandy aging in our cantine to open at just the right moment. Who knows why the mold started growing but it did. When I first took of the metal top of the bottle of Cotes de Nuits-Villages by Gerard Julien, I thought that there wasnt too much mold to really make a difference. Then I started unscrewing the cork. It was moist and soft, in fact it broke halfway through. Not a good sign I thought. I still decantered the wine (since the bottom half of the cork had to be pushed into the bottle) and thought, well, its looks and smells ok. A very transparent, light red color; an intense truffle smell mixed with that of balsamic vinegar, baked strawberries and apples, a rose bouquet, white chocolate and hints of white pepper. I tried to overlook the strong alcohol smell, which was closer to the smell of nail polish remover than anything else, since it was an older wine- 1999 in fact. But nothing helped. The taste just wasnt right. Hardly tannic and overwhelmingly alcoholic, while still round and velvety, the overcooked feeling I got from the wine just stood out too much. The wine was over. What a shame. Oh well, onto the next!

Greco di Tufo, is an great wine made mainly from the Greco grape. Its not too acidic like a Sauvignon and not heavy like a Chardonnay which makes it prefect for a midday drink or paired with a meal. Grown in the heart of Irpinia, it is where you can also find Fiano di Avellino and Taurasi the other two DOCG of Campagnia. Vesevo, the producer of this and other delightful wines, is named after Vesuvio, the volcano (for those of you who dont know) which from years of explosions have left an incredibly fertile land with pockets of tufo, a porous rock great for grape growing.
This rock also leaves a mineral imprint on the wine, which when drunk young is light and clear, fruity and floral. If aged in barrel it adapts well to the wood and picks up favorable vanilla and nutty flavors. Vesevo is no exception. It has intense floral perfumes and well balanced and round on the tongue. Fresh and mineral but also soft and velvety- it does afterall have 13.5% alcohol. They are a large company so trying to find them in youre local wine store shouldnt be a problem.
Vote 88/100

Champagne Jean Pierre Marniquet

Traveling and having friends that travel is a great thing especially when they bring you back food and wine particular to the region. A bottle of Jean Pierre Marniquet, brought back by a friend from France, is a wonderfully fresh and profumed 1^er cru Champagne. White flowers and a touch of nuttiness with just a hint of the typical bread crust odor of yeast used to create the bubbles in such wines. Elegant on the tounge, dry, light and easily drinkable. A great champagne to be enjoyed on any occasion.
Vote 92/100

Unfortunately not everyone is cut out for living here in Venice, not that I always blame them. So on the eve of a close friend moving back home we decided to throw a party and drank way too much. Even though by the third bottle I was hardly able to understand white from red, I was sober enough to enjoy a rare bottle by Riserva Fondatori Saxi. This bottle is unique because it represents a new trend in wine- a sparkling Durello. The Cantina di Montecchia located in the province of Verona, is a multiple vineyard Cantine producing everything from Soave to Amarone, to grappa and passiti. The Durello grape, producing a typically strong, full bodied and viney tasting wine, lightens up and can even be refreshing as a bubbler. The Riserva dei Fondatori in particular is golden colored with a long lasting perlage. Definatly sweeter than a prosecco due to the hints of honey and camomille. Round and soft which tends to be the opposite of what one would look for in a sparkling wine, the result is interesting to say the least and pairable with a much wider range of foods. A wine type definatly to look into for the future if hosting a dinner party, especially with New Years coming up.

Mas de la Dame and Wine Bar NYC

Back from our whirlwind trip in New York, we finally have some time to think and write about the great places we stumbled upon or went back to as always, while out with friends and family. Stopping in twice to one of my favorite place, (Paolo and I had found this place last year) Wine Bar NYC on 2nd Ave, I was able to look over an extensive menu of French, Italian and Spanish wine. The first bottle we opened on a quiet wednesday night, was a French wine which the waitress helped me decide on. A Grenache, Syrah blend by Mas de la Dame, this vineyard from Provence is proud to say that they practice Organic agriculture. Not using pesticides or herbicides is a trend now used is America and Italy, but something the French have practiced for awhile. La Gourmande 2005 bottle is an easy drinking wine, made to be drunk young and possibly even chilled. It has a ruby red color, medium consistency and an array of perfumes. Cherry, strawberry, rasberry, pomogranite, black berry and current fruits are reminders that this wine is still young, while the white chocolate, white pepper, cumin and tire smells are some of the unique flavors brought on by these grapes. The alcohol was a bit overwhelming at first, but over time opened and proved itself worthy. Intense, tannic and fresh it paired wonderfully with the flatbreads served by the wine bar. The first a porcini mushroom and truffle oil with melted fontina cheese- fantastic, and brought out the spices of the wine; while the other a spinach, cumin, roasted pepper and asiago balanced the sweetness of the fruit. Besides the flatbreads we also indulged in grilled baby calamari, marinated in oil, garlic parsley and lemon. I keep coming back to this place, maybe for the atmosphere, maybe for the service and the knowledge that most people that work there have. Either way, a trip to NY for wine lovers wouldn't be complete without a stop and a sip.

Unfortuanatly I don't drink French wine as often as I liked to, but sometimes certain occasions call for a celebration. After passing and getting my Master in Sommelier Service, Paolo and I opened a 2005 Chateauneuf du Pape by Cheateau Fortia. Produced in the Rhone Valley, these wines are mainly made from the Grenache grape, but can also have additions of Syrah, Cinsault, Terret Noir, Counoise, Picardin, Vaccarèse, Muscardin, Clairette, Roussane e Bourboulence. This particular vineyard originated by Baron P. Le Roy de Boiseaumarie, claims to be one of the oldest and best in France. I wouldnt go as far as to say it was the best, but it was still a great bottle. Lets get down to the nitty gritty. A transparent ruby red, the legs were very evident due to the 15% alcohol of this wine. This was very evident in the taste and smell too, so we decided to decant the wine and let is rest for a bit. The result was much more elegant and smoother wine, even though we were still able to be drunk halfway through the bottle! Many aromas are captured in this wine- from ripe reds fruits, strawberries, rainsins and red apple, to spices like cloves, cinnamin and black pepper to aged smells like suede and white chocolate. Like I said before, the first taste was a bit harsh due to the alcohol but, was also intense, smooth and tannic. Great to be paired with some French cheeses, perhaps a brie or a meat stew or veal cutlet.

Modus 2004 azienza Ruffino

This blend of Sangiovese, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon is a typical blend in Tuscany. Unfortuanatly this wine wasnt even typical. Ruffina, one of the more well known brands from this region and one of the biggest sellers to the American market, definatly let us down on this one. Ok, so maybe im being a bit harsh, I mean it was drinkable but just over astringent and alcoholic. The color was typical and the bouquet was hopeful, but the finess and harmony of a great wine just wasnt there. Too much vanilla, lack of fruit, overall unbalanced. If you do decide to get this bottle make sure you eat something strong with, like sausage or BBQ!
Vote 79/100

Troppo tempo in barrique.
Ottimo con dei rigatoni e salsiccia.

Sardegna

Sometimes vacations aren't really as relaxing as they should. How many times have you said, 'I need a vacation from my vacation.' Sometimes finding that pure tranquility can be hard, and sometimes its just too easy.
Whats great about Sardegna is that there really isn't much to do other than soak up the sun and enjoy the natural beauty of the place. Already too touristy, pushing back inland and away from any port or airport is the way to go, but also makes finding good restaurants hard to find. But have no fear, what sardegna does offer is a great variety of local treats- fresh fish, cheese straight from the farm and small indiginious vineyards. After a couple of trips through the winding roads we collected everything we needed for an amazing dinner at home overlooking the sunset. Not having all the provisions we needed we still we able to prepar a feast fit for a king, and believe it or not even cooked our fish in the toaster over! First up cheese. 2 types of ricotta- the first aged and straight from the pastor. It was incredably profumed, pasty, dry intense and long lasting when eaten. The second, a less aged was slightly smoked, a bit gelatonous and slightly spicy. Along with the ricotta we found an absolutly unforgettable pecorino aged in mirto leaves. Strong and herby, salty but too much, I havent had a cheese so good in ages. Next, we had octopus boiled in white wine, water, onions and herbs. It turned out amazing- not to chewy perfectly seasoned and fresh. Once the scorfano (scorpion fish) was stewed to softness, we had that paired with the cherry tomatoes and pearl onions that melted into sauce. All of this wonderfull food was washed down by another local treat, a Cannonau- one of my favorite wines. Ruby red on the verge of granite, this local producers wine was white pepper spicy, rasberry fruity and floreal rose. Intense and sapid it fell a bit short on the persistance and tannicity. Overall a good red wine, light enough for fish. After dinner we drank the obvious choice- mirto, also from a local farm with amaretto cookies. Three hours after we had started cooking we were full and happy and had indulged in one of the best dinners and sunsets we've had on vacation.

Cune Rioja Crianza 2005

From the Alta Rioja region in Spain arrives this 2005 Crianza, from the well known Cune Estate. With worldwide importation they still use traditional methods of wine making. Made from 80% Tempranillo, the rest a mix of Mazuelo and Garnacha tinta. Red, fruity and warm, it was typical of most riojas- nothing extravagant but still a good wine to drink. I personally am a fan of riojas- I love the oakiness and freshness of these wines. Very powerfull and persistant. This is one is great because the tannins and alcohol dont overpower the fruits. We were offered this delightful wine to be paired which cheeses and meats from the region, at the cutest cafe/restaurant in Madrid called the 'Secret Garden.' Not far from Grand Via and Alberto Aquillera, this place is packed out every night and offers a broad range of local and international dishes.

BodegasTerras Gauda 2007 Rasal at Los Huevos de Lucio

On our first night out in Madrid, we headed down to the latin quarter in search of my beloved tapas. Passing by many restaurants that offered a variety of food and wine we stopped at Los Huevos de Lucio on the famous calle de Cava Baja. We pulled up to the bar and asked the bartender what he recommended for a refreshing bottle of white on an unbearably hot day. The meritage wine produced by Bodegas Terras Gauda is a wonderful blend of albariño (70%), loureiro and caiño blanco. The strong, intense aromas of this wine paired perfectly with our seared tuna and aspargus stems appetizer. Remnents of orange and lemon, sage and other herbs were carried through to the taste which was equally as intense and persistant. Well-balanced, warm and velvelty, the time this wine spent in barrel was not an overkill to the taste which can often happen with whites. Continuing on with Spanish cheeses, salami and jambon, while looking at the pictures of past presidents and celebrities on the wall, de Lucio was a great welcome to our time in the city.

Flaibani Cabernet Sauvignon Riserva 2005 14%

Fruilian producer Flaibani has created an easily drinkable and good quality cabernet sauvignon. The 2005 Riserva (with 14% alcohol) is extremely consistant and is a ruby red color with darker highlights. It has an intense, round bouquet, full of spices- black and white pepper, cinamin, tabacco as well as other favorable smells like prune, fresh herbs, grafite and aloe. Although the flavor wasnt as great as the smells, it was still soft, tannic, warm and persistant and carries forth the fruit.
Vote 89/100

Big fans of Umbria we are, but the wines created by Cantina Altarocca- not so much. We tried their 'Lavico' and the merlot, both of which were over the top in alcohol. The Lavico, made from Merlot, Cabernet and Sangiovese had a delightful bouquet but fell short when the cinamin, vanilla, clove and cherry smells didnt carry on to the taste. The merlot was also a beautiful red color represntative of most merlots, but unfortuanatly too unbalanced- the freshness indicative of merlot wasnt there and the grape was masked by the heavy wood tannins and alcohol.
Vote 75/100

After returning from a relaxing trip in Sardegna, we finally have some time to write about the great food and wine we had there. Unfortuanately, this once desolate island has become a huge tourist trap and authentic food and people have become harder to find. However, we did discover a few good places for original tastes. Aged pecorino cheese wrapped in mirto leaves, mirto (which I am a huge fan of and will discuss later), bottarga; which is dried tuna or mullet fish egg usually grated over pasta, gnocchetti sardi and many others.
At a very well informed wine store in the town of Castelsardo, we were introduced to an interesting and hard to find wine by the Azienda Carpante called Carpante Rosso. Its a 2006 harvest produced in Usini in the province of Sassari. This young vineyard grows your typical Sardegnian grapes like Cannonau, and Vermentino with some harder to pronounce, harder to find grapes like Cagnulari, Maristellu and Pascale. The Carpante Rosso is a blend of 90% Cagnulari and 10% Pascale or Bovale. All of the vines are in 'tree' form and have an age of around 30 yrs.
The wine is an intense ruby red color with purple highlights. Equally intense profumes of mirto (Mmmm), ripe cherries, liquorish and black pepper. The taste was warm and fresh, slightly mineral and had a touch of tannin. It was definatly still on the young side but interesting the same. The red fruit aromas continued through in the mouth and was much better when paired with some pecorino.
Vote 84/100

Maso Martis Brut Riserva

This sparkler was definately not what I was expecting. During our Italian sparkling wine night and tapas, this Brut Riserva by Maso Martis came into the mix. A full bouquet of flowers and ripe fruits like pear, it turns out that the taste is a bit sweeter than most champagne styled wines. Not that it was bad, but maybe it would be better served as an after or pre dinner drink or with raw fish as recommended by the azienda. Vanilla was the main subject on our pallate, reminding us of resemblences like cream soda and vanilla waffer cookies. Grown and produced in Trento, the mix is 70% Pinot grigio, 25% Chardonnay and 5% Pinot Meunier. The bubbles were fine and persistant and overall this is a wine of optimum quality, a brilliant golden color and is well rounded and balanced. Trento Doc the upcoming region of classic method sparkling wines has a lot to offer and is slowing becoming as well recognized as its famous rival Champagne. With a wider range of flavors, for example this Brut by Masi Martis, we're looking forward to see where these wines can take us.
Vote 90/100

Pesce e piatti estivi. Da abusarne!!!

Podere San Giacomo, Brunello 2003

I absolutely love this wine. We were introduced to this new-comer at the Brunello convention in Montalcino in February and since then, we havent been able to stop talking about it. The 2003 Brunello is the first vintage put out by Podere San Giacomo, and what a wine it is. Fruity and fresh, it is a younger tasting brunello, but still creates the depth needed to be considered a top wine. Even the ruby-like color reminds us of it youthfullness unlike many brunellos which can have an orange nail. Berries, spices and a warm cream are some of the many aromas, and with 13.5% alcohol its warm and velvety. WIth such a great start we're sure Podere San Giacomo is going places. They also make a fantastic Rosso di Montalcino.

Prodotto in 3000 bottiglie. Assolutamente da avere nella propria cantina.

Masi Amarone 1995, Serego Alighieri Vaio Amaron

Drinking a special bottle with friends who also appreciate fine wine, is a beautiful thing. During our hot spell here in Venice last week, amongst our many great bottles was an impressive Amarone by Masi. As we've mentioned before, the Amarone wine is one of the more important Italian wines and also one of the hardest to make- making it one of the more expensive. Masi, one of the more well known producers, created a fantastic, almost syrupy, well rounded wine with its 1995 vintage. Upon opening this bottle, you'll need to let it breath a bit before all the really important flavors can properly develope. A dark granite verging on orange color, with slow moving legs thick on the glass, engulfing the very intense and bountiful aromas. Tabacco, white chocolate, leather, marmalades, and red fruits in alcohol, to name a few. Extremely velvety, a slight sweetness, intense, well balanced, persistant and harmonious. Great with everything from aged cheese to a juicy steak.

Grazie Masi.

Sutto Ultimo

In the area of Treviso, a star is born. Located about 40 kilometers north of Venice, this terratory is not really known outside of the Veneto and really only produces international wines. Sutto, who has 50 acres and produces many different wines from Merlot to Pinot Grigio has put a mouth watering desert wine, made from the Veruzzo and Sauvignon grapes. Ultimo, created from late harvested wines is a golden yellow wine with a nose full of aromas like fig, honey, almond and even a hint of white chocolate. It is elegant and soft in the mouth and not overpowerly sweet- it still holds its freshness, which for a sweet wine is sometimes hard to achieve. A good intensity and persistance. Great when paired with fruit cakes and othe deserts- we had ours with a peach champagne mouse.

While working at Vinitaly, a wine fair in Verona the first week of April, I had the fortune of meeting a distributor for Portugal wine named Marcio Ferreira (Vini Portugal). Although I found some of the wines to be a bit strong or alcoholic, a few stood out in my mind. The first, a tawny port by Casa de Santa Eufemia. With 19.5% in alcohol, I can still consider this port to be easier and fruiter than other tawnies Ive had in the past. Granite in color and obviously consistant it still remained transparent throughout. An overall intenseness with many smells like leather, tobacco, coffee and chocolate- which comes from its time in barrel- raisins, cinnamin, cloves, dried herbs, figs and prunes. Even the smoothness of the wine came through with just one sniff. Unfortuanatly if was a bit short in its persistancy and freshness, but the bouque showed in the taste which is something that doesnt often happen. The warm, velvety, milk chocolate filled my mouth while the strength of the alcohol filled my stomach. A robust wine great to pair with chocolaty desserts... an ooze cake perhaps?

PieroPan 'Calvarino' 2004

As I've probably stated before, Soave wines can have a bad rep for what they produced in 'earlier' days. However, times have changed and amid the refined producers, we find PieroPan. They make a few types of Soave including the recioto, but the one in particular I tried today was the 'Calvarino' Soave Classico. 70% Garganega and 30% Trebbiano, its straw like color and light consistancy is typical of most whites. Herby and vegetal, minty and fruity, the bouquet is intense and sharp with a freshness that remindes us of summer breezes and rain (a period in which Im desperatly waiting for!). Intense, complex, and long lasting, it brings forth the flavors we smelled just a moment earlier onto our palate. Well-rounded, clean, crisp and mineral with maybe an extra touch of warmth. A fantastic soave deserved to be opened.

On a roadtrip to the Lison-Pramaggiore area near Treviso for a wine tasting, we decided to stay for dinner and look for an agriturismo since we were starving! Down the road from where we were we spotted a little hand written sign that proclaimed 'restaurant open'- perfect! A large brick farmhouse stood at the end of the road... the type of homes that I love about Italy. We walked in, sat down and listened the specials. Not a large choice, but interesting to say the least. Between the four of us we shared an anitpasta plate of frittata, baked bread stuffed with sausage, a spinach and cheese square, sauteed radiccio and onion on a crostino and home made pancetta. For the main course I had roasted pheasant, a personal favorite, Paolo had rabbit and our friends chose trippa and musetto (musetto is like a sausage from pig meat typical to the area of emilia-romagna and trippa is nerves in a tomato sauce). I cant say I really enjoyed the wine- after all it was just table wine from the area, but the couple who ran the joint were super cute and even showed us around the farm after dinner. Three rooms are available to rent for the night and in a larger room they offer daycare and play time for children. Great idea!

Azienda Agricola Padeletti

During our trip to Tuscany for a Brunello wine fair in Montalcino, we had the pleasure of meeting many producers who had a lot to say about their product. We were taken back by one in particular, who we first met at a restaurant they also own in the center of Montalcino. The restaurant is called Osteria D'Altri Tempi, was recommended to us by a friend back in Venice but also by the owner of the apartment we rented. It was your typical Tuscan Osteria with typical Tuscan food. Our appetizers were amazing and simple. A piece of Tuscan bread with melted fresh pecorino cheese and honey (did you know Montalcino is also known as the city of honey?) and a plate of sliced meets, cheeses and a few bruschetta's. For the main course we shared rabbit in a Brunello sauce and Cingiale (wild boar). Everything was unforgetable, but the wine we drank with our dinner was out of this world. The Brunello Padelletti 1998 was so elegant and balanced I couldnt believe it only cost 20 Euro and I couldnt wait to try more of their product.
The day after the wine fair we stopped by the home of the Padeletti family, which is also their site of production and run by the son Silvano, and was shown around. Probably the oldest producers in Montalcino (that still exist) they had labels from over 100 years ago and bottles dating back to the 20's. Fermentation tanks dating back to who knows when made out of cemente and made to fit within the small walls of the place. We tasted their lastest brunello out (a 2004) which was still better than most of the brunellos I had tasted the day before, but I was still dreaming of the '98. Their price/quality is excellent and they themselves are humble and kind people who are proud of their heritage as wine makers. If ever in the area, you must check them out!

Ombre Rosse

To celebrate Valentines Day, Paolo and I decided to go to a restaurants we had been to only once before, Enoteca Ombre Rosse in the city of San Trovaso near Treviso. Claudio, the owner, is well known for his large collection of wine, but also for his character- While waiting for our table to be ready, he offered us fresh glass of Pinot Bianco of the Azienda Drius di Cormons from the Fruili Venezia Giulia region. An interesting, well rounded, fuller bodied white, good for winter. The restaurant is very welcoming and I can only guess used to be the ground floor of someones home, after noticing details of where a fireplace used to be or the arrangement of walls. Theres a garden turned seating area outside great for warm summer nights paired with cool sparklers. Once seated we ordered a bottle of Chianti Classico by the Fontodi group, 2006 and checked out the menu. I choose an Insalata di Burrata (my favorite mozzarella) and a steak tartar for the main course; meanwhile Paolo went with the pasta fagiolo for an appetizer and guancine di vitello (or veal cheek) with polenta. Tasting our wine, we discovered that 70% of the ground used to create the grapes is biologic and creates a wine with 14% alcohol andof grand quality. It is still young, so the color was purple going towards ruby adn showed many legs. Fruity smells like rasberry, cherry and strawberry, with touches of violets, graphite, cloves, licquorish and anice. It was fresh and mineral, dry, warm and soft, with a large amount of tannin. Although my cold held me back from tasting everything perfectly, we both really enjoyed the food, atmosphere and wine.

Nite in Park Slope

With our recent move back to Italy, our time has been cut short on writing about our experiences in New York- no thanks to the economy. However, we do have a few wines and restaurants that we want to talk about before we close the page. The last few weeks in my beloved New York were filled with friends and family. On one occasion friends of our made dinner for us in their home in Park Slope. By the end of the night we had gone through 6 bottles, but a few more than others stood out in our minds.
Ermintage du Pic St. Loup, a 2005 meritage of Syrah (55%), Grenache (35%) and Mourvedre (10%), is from the Coteaux du Lanquedoc region in the southeast of France. Not as well known as other french regions, its probably a good reason the price was really good for a french wine! A thick, consistant purply red, with peppermint, grass, licquorish, earth, red fruits, blackberry, chocolate and mineral perfumes. It was an intense taste that was extra persistant with a bit of freshness, minerality, warth and velvetness. A definate must try.
Another wine we really enjoyed was the Sassoalloro. Produced by the famous Biondi Santi in 2000 (American Vitners in Tuscany) it is neither a 'Supertuscan' or a Brunello, but falls rather in the 'rosso' catagory and is therefor cheaper even if the quality is top. Since it is a 2000, it has aged longer than the other bottles and had a granite color with lots of legs to prove it. Woody, foresty, plum, aloe, vanilla and bit of salt and honey, the smells were quite interesting and I wondered how the taste would compare. Dry and tannic, warm and velvety, as weird as it sounds i went well with chocolate chip cookies! (or maybe I had drunk too much by that time!)
Last and not least was a 2001 merlot called Il Tesoro. Although Im not a big merlot fan, Paolo really enjoyed this one, and so therefor we are writing about it. An IGT Toscana, it had a light granite color with light consistancy. A medium intensity with a much better persistancy, there were hints of woods, dark cherries, strawberries, balsamic and black current. It even smelled aged. The taste was similar to the smell- medium intensity, persistancy, and tannicity, it was very dry, with a medium acidity and minerality- to me it was lost in time.

"Meraviglioso" come cantano i Negroamaro.

Cannonau Josto Miglior Riserva 2004 13.5°

Like I said, Nadine brought back from Sardegna more then one bottle of wine. The Cannonau 'Josto' Riserva 2004 by Antichi Poderi di Jerzu was the bottle recommended by the owner of the wine shop. Totally different from the Perda Rubia Cannonau, this was less fruity but more tannic, dry and aged (aged more is proven by the name riserva). It was however the typical ruby red color with granite highlights. Its bouquet was closer to a Piedmontese wine with smells of truffle, balsamic, prune, cinnamin, black pepper, tabacco, herbs and strawberry jam. It was warm upon taste with a grand intesity and discrete persistance, freshness and sapidity. A wine that can mature for a longer period than the precendent and better to be paired with meats.
Vote 85/100

Stessa serata altro Cannonau. Voto 82/100

Cannonau di Sardegna Perda Rubia 14.5°

Sardegna. An relatively unknown island, a bit smaller than that of Sicily, hanging out in the middle of the mediterranean to the west of Italy; is the topic of our next wines. Its rugged terrain, beautiful beaches and endless amounts of sheep; bring many to its coasts to live the good life- if only for a week or two. Our friend Nadine was one of these lucky people to go to the vast Island, even if most of her time was spent inside working. She did however dine on maiolino and gnocchetti and most importantly, brought back some local wines for her closest friends. Sardegna has many indigenous grapes, the most famous being the Cannonau. Known most recently for its health reasons (its high quantity of antioxidents have been named in the reason that many residents of the island live longer than anywhere else in the world) Cannonau is a relative to Grenache in France, Garnacha in Spain and Tocai Rosso in the Veneto of Italy. Perda Rubia DOC by Azienda Agraria is an amazing view of what the best wines of this type can be. Typically transparent, a ruby red color with granite highlights and thick, potent legs (it is after all 14.5% in alcohol) the beautifully intense aromas bring out everything a Cannonau should be- black cherries, plums, roses, balsamic, asphalt and alcohol. Easy to drink, it was intense, warm, persistant salty, fresh, velvety and well rounded. Light on the tannins, which is normal for the grape I couldnt have enough. Paired with two equally wonderful cheeses- a Paladin Bavarian Blue from Germany- which for those like me who dont care for blue cheese this is a must try, you'll change your view! and a Renero Pecorine Stagionato from Italy. I preferred this wine more than Paolo but my other guests shared my love.
Vote: 93/100

Voto 82/100

Jayson Napa Valley 2002 15.5°

Starting off the New years right, and trying to forget about the bad economy, we drank one of the most delicious bottles of wine. Jayson is one of the favorites of my cousins husband and is a mix of Cabernet Sauv., Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Produced in Napa Valley, California, it isnt your typical heavy American wine. This 2002 vintage blend is produced by the Pahlmeyer agency who grows many other grapes such as Chardonnay. Pahlmeyer tries to make a sleak modern wine with a bit of pizzazz- and they did. This wine is extremely elegant, well rounded and balanced. It is an intense red with a granate rim which comes from the time spent in new oak barriques. Just as intense as the color, the perfumes where mesmerizing- blackberry, black cherry and plum jam, wax, balsalmic, tabacco, woods and chocolate; a masculine mix of what a great cab should be. These smells became flavors when the wine swirled into our mouths making us feel warm and happy. The softness of the merlot, the tannins from the cab, and the saltiness from the earth combined delicately and remained as velvfet. Although the 15.5% alcohol grade is really high it doesnt come across as overbearing but instead make me think of an Amarone and wonder if the process was similar. A great wine for contemplation or with steak and probably better in the winter that on hot summer days, one of the few American wines worth the money!
Vote 92/100

Buon anno a tutti.
