Umbria III

On our last day in Umbria, we had to (of course) visit some of the local wineries. Our first stop was a vineyard we hadn't heard of before called Adanti. Set on a picturesque landscape, we entered the villa antisipating the wine within. One white, five reds and an out of this world desert Sagrantino later, we were in love with this place. Our 'host' was intellegent and informative, explaining to us all about the Sagrantino grape and the differences between the Doc, Docg and the marriages they created with is and other grapes. We were also amazed by the passito and how well sagrantino does as a desert wine (later finding out that the origins of the grape wine started as a sweet wine) After we bought a few of our favorites we thought the since we were in the area we should visit Assisi, home of the Franciscan monk and his church. The city, now a mecca to Christians, was full of tourists and medalions dedicated to the holy man. The church is set high on a hill and is visible from many surrounding towns. It was destroyed during an earthquake in 09/26/1997 and restored to its original state a few years ago. Beautiful and open, but the insane amount of people really keeps you from enjoying the experience fully. Once we'd had enough, we set of to find a Cipolloni or a place where olive oil is made. Umbria is also home to some of the best oil in Italy more olive trees the vineyards can be seen from the small roads. The Cipolloni we went to was recommended to us by our friend Andrea and is considered a great oil for the price. We tasted their regular oil and the reserva, taking home with us a couple of bottles. Back the B&B to rest and pack, sad to see the day coming to an end. We had been invited for dinner by our new friends and were interested in seeing their much talked about home. Set in the middle of fields, the ranch style home was full of ceramics and homey in an artists way. We helped set the table for the 10 expected guests and opened a few bottles of wine made by small local producers. Once everyone arrived we laughed and dined on local food, slightly enhanced by the brazilian ideas of cooking. With dogs running around us, we spoke of future plans and past experiences, all the time thinking to myself, what a simple easy life, could I live like this? Away from the hustle of city life? Maybe.

And on our drive back to Venice, I thought about it more and more. The simple life in a beautiful place full of amazing people, food and wine. Why not after all? Being happy is whats most important isn't it. And now, back in NY, I still think about Umbria and the friends we met and the places we visited. Who knows, maybe we will end there one day. It wouldn't be half bad, thats for sure.

Tokay Pinot Gris W.Gisselbrecht 2004

Tokay or Tocai is a wine type made from the Furmint grape which grows in Hungary and produces the famed Tokay Aszu. However, the people who thought they were bring back this traditionally sweet grapeback to Alsace, France 500 years ago, it turned out that is wasnt Tokay at all, but Pinot Grigio (or Gris in French), and the named later changed to a mix of the two- Tokay Pinot Grigio. This white is normally a robust, strong smelling wine made to be had with dinner. And, in fact this bottle by Vitners W. Gisselbrecht has intense and complex aromas, in particular floreal, honey, roasted almonds and spices. It can almost seem fatty or oily in the glass and when drunk, but it does give you a warm feeling almost christmas like. Because of this and its great persistance it can be served with heavy dishes like fois gras of poultry roasts. I would really recommend this delicious wine to go with your holiday dinner or party.
Vote 85/100

Although I personally am not particular to Chardonnay, I am a fan however of Chablis. A Chardonnay from Bourgogne France, the Chablis is slightly fresher and definately lighter than the typical heavy, buttery and vanilla flavored style. This vineyard, La Chablisienne puts out a few types of Chablis from Petit to Grand Cru. The bottle I am talking about today is Premier Cru from Mont de Milieu (remember each Cru must come from a specific land area to be called a Cru) 2003. A light, clear yellow with golden highlights, perfumes are somewhat typical to a chardonnay- peachy, apricoty, floreal, the light wood or maybe a forest smell shows secondary. The taste was elegant and well balanced. Intense, fresh, slightly mineral and it didnt have the barriqued flavor which I was thanksful for. Overall it was a nice wine, great with a fish dinner.
Vote 85/100

Paradou restaurant in NY

In times like these, stores and restaurants a like are doing anything possible to get or keep clients. Sales, deals, shows, discounts- you name it. So when we choose a little place called Paradou in the meatpacking district of New York City, we were shocked when we saw how hard it was to actually get the discount they promised.
We had originally decided to go there mainly because we had passed by, thought it different and we liked the slogan- 'We're not fancy, but our food is' or something like that, and they were right. At the end of the meal, I went to the bathroom seeing for the first time their list of 'deals' and 'specialty' nights. 'Dec 8th, free bottle of wine.' With that, it was written to make a reservation or tell you waiter and use this code. What are we in some brothel in the 1920's I thought? Needing a password? But still I thought that getting our half liter of wine free would be great (especially since it was so expensive and really not that good) but when I asked the waiter he said it was by reservation only. Well that wasn't what it said on the list- so I asked the manager and she said oh no you must be on the mailing list. Thats funny, never heard of the mailing list before and it definatly wasn't written on the sheet of discounts and deals. So really did they want to give anyone a free bottle of wine? I doubt it. They claim they want to help out the people until the DOW reaches 12000? Just a ploy to make you think that there are some decent people out there trying to help out the unemployed citizens of NY. One would think that if you want people to come back or share their happy thoughts about a restaurant with others they would have discounted the bottle either way, but they didnt. So here's our nasty thoughts on the place. Bland overpriced food, in a quasi dive looking atmosphere, without hardly any heat and they probably use cheap, crappy wine for their 'quarter' and 'half' bottles since they never showed or poured you the wine from the original bottle (something unheard of in Europe). But most of all, the fact that a place offers you one thing and doesnt give it to you is absoluty distasteful.

Orrore !!! Ragazzi assolutamente da evitare questo locale.

Beaujolais Nouveau Domaine Dupeuble Pere et Fils 2008 12,5%

November is the month of Beaujolais and Novello. Two wonderfully unique and fresh wines produced in a manor to be drunk and enjoyed early while all other wines are maturing. This November we've been drinking a lot more beaujolais than novello's (which are different than the french version and which I miss) but we did have one interesting one by Domaine Dupeuble Pere et Fils. The purple color is typical to these extremely young wines as well as its purfumes- fresh red and purple fruits and flowers, especially strawberries and grapes. This bottle in particular was drier and softer than other rescent beaujolais Ive had (George Doeuff), with discrete amounts of tannins and heat. Ready to drink and unageable, the beaujolais is best drunk within the first year its born.
Vote 80/100

Radikon Oslavje 2003 14%

At our apartment for dinner with a great group of friends, we opened and drank a cellarsworth of wine one bottle in particular was Radikon. A name well known amoungst wino's, Ive been waiting to try this particular juice. Like my husband said, it was like a child on christmas getting the toy he asked for. The vineyard, Stanko Radikon is located in the Friuli region of Italy in the province of Gorizia, which is near the Slovanian border. The 10 hectors of land they own produce a large quantity of grapes such as; Ribolla gialla, Chardonnay, Pinot grigio, Sauvignon, Tocai friulano e Merlot. Whats so special about this wine? Well there are a few things, the first being the absence of added yeast. Therefor maceration and fermentation happen naturally with the yeast found only the skins and stems of the grape. Because they are left in the fermentation tank they wine is darker in color (a white wine) then most. The wine is never filtered and sulfites are never added, leaving these yeasts in the liquid and the final product is thicker looking and has pieces of sediment. So why is this a good thing? well first, is all natural- but because there are no sulfites you won't get that 'wine headache' typical especially of whites. But more importantly, all this creates very individual and unique tastes and smells. The Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Grigio used for this particular bottle produces an intense amber yellow wine, with smells of apricot, pinapple, candied fruits and stone. Soft, warm, fresh and mineral with even a touch of tannin (due to the time spent in barique). It wass well balanced and persistant, and unlike anything Ive had before. I must admit though that I was not as impressed as my friends, maybe because the slight hint of oxidation is not something I particularly enjoy. However, I must applaud them for their effort in production and the uniqueness of the wine. I recommened Radikon to everyone to try, but it does have a high price...
Vote 92/100

Donnhoff Riesling Auslese 7.5% vol.

On a trip to an upper east side wine shop for a tasting, we came across a bottle of Riesling, from the Nahe region in southwest Germany. We found it in the desert area mixed with others after dinner wines and thought it looked interesting. Riesling, is the principle grape in this country, where winters are long and cold and sun exposure is short. In Nahe, these grapes are grown alongside the river Reno, giving the vines the nutrients they need to survive. The terrain is diverse and rich of quartz which it receives from its branching streams; the Idarbch, Kyrbach, Hahnenbach and Simmerbach.
The classification of German wines can be quite confusing too, since they are rated by the quantity of sugar in the grape. This particular Riesling is an Auslese, which means that the grapes were harvested late in the season, and there is an elevated amount of sugar (but not much compared to Icewein!) The amount of alcohol is 7%, which is low due to the low amount of sun. Getting to the 'gustazione' of the wine itself, the Riesling della Azienda Donnhoff is a clear, vivascious straw color, with perfumes of golden apples, pinapple, grapefruit and a note of fresh flowers, musk and sage. The taste was obviously sweet, but not overpoweringly so. Medium softness, low heat, and higher amounts of acidity and minerality. Intense and persistent, it would be great with German treats like a Danish or struddle or a classic American dish like apple pie.
Vote 85/100

Umbria II

After one of the best nights sleep we've had in awhile, we woke, opened the window and took in a deep breath of fresh mountain air. A new day with new hopes and expectations. A warm cappucino and homemade cakes were waiting for us when we came downstairs and as usual we ate too much. The owner, Angelo, had told us the night before that his wife, Assunta, had another restaurant in the next town over of Bevagna, so we set off to dine at her small boutique. Her place 'La Bottega di Assu' reminded me of a cafe in Paris or maybe in the Village; walls covered in fotos and stacks of books on wine and food pilled high on the floor. We sat outside, even though it was windy, and with a bottle of Grecante of Caprai, ate a wonderful bruscetta of fresh veggies and a drizzle of Umbrian oil. Paolo then had a soup, and for me, a pasta. The town was quiet, but still beautiful. After lunch we went to meet Andrea, the brazilian woman we booked our B&B for us. An artist who has been married and living in Umbria now for years, she showed us her studio of ceramic sculptures, located in the city of Foligno. Afterward, we walked through the city back towards our car and discovered a party. Every year around the beginning of September, the town recreates 'medival times.' The city is divided into parts, and they battle each other for honor. Dressed in traditional clothes they ride their horses through the city and with a jousting stick pick up rings hung throughout the town. The one with the most rings wins. We decided to join in the fun and entered the hall of the 'jousters' for dinner. Before dinner was over, a contest between some of the groups started up over who could drum better. A bit much, but we went home smiling. Upon arriving back at the B&B, we couldnt help but order another glass of sagrantino and some jambon from Spain. I think I must have gained 5 lbs already. We stayed up late talking to the waitress Paola about ideas for the future and of course our love of wine.

Adoro Montefalco!!!

Umbria Part I

To go back a bit in time, Ive been meaning to tell you all about our trip tp Umbria. Since our time in Puglia wasnt going as planned, we decided to make a change and go north to Umbria. On a recomondation from a friend, and our love of Sagrantino, we headed to a medival town call Montefalco, to stay for three nights in a bed and breakfast. After a 13 hour drive (yes you read correctly) we arrived in the city around 10 pm exhausted from everything. Our horrible mood changed as soon as we were greeted at our car by a woman who worked at the wine bar/restaurant at the B&B. A beautiful wall-in city made of stone with small alleyways reminding you of what times were like before cars. The place called Spirito di vino was amazing. We were brought up to our room (one of three) and melted into the bed. It was amazing. Clean, well put together and restored, we began to forget about our prior days. After a shower we headed downstairs for something to eat. Their menu was great. Typical Umbrian cusine with a choice of the best salami, proscuittos and cheese from all over Europe. 20 types of oils and a long wine line (including of course almost all of the Sagrantinos!) We opted for a cheese and proscuitto plate (duh) a tomato soup and a steak; to be washed down of course with a full bodied Sagrantino di Montefalco Azienda Tabarrini. Everything was delicious. After dinner we headed upstairs to bed, thanking our friends for helping us find this little jewel.

Plantaze Vranac 2004 Lake Skadar Valley 12,5

On our quest to find great wine for a great price, we stumbled upon a random bottle at our local wine shop called Vranac dell'azienza Plantaze. Haling from Montenegro, (a small country next to Croatia, for those of you who dont know) this winery produces a few wine types, but the one we had was a Vranac, an indiginous red.
While repeating this stange new name over and over in my head, I studied the color: a ruby red with granite highlights; the smell: very likeable fruits (prugnes and strawberries), floreals (violets and violas) and earth (tabacco and cocao); and taste: dry, soft and warm with a good persistance and intesity, more mineral than acidic, and a good amount of tannins, however leaving just a touch of bitterness at the end. A complete surprise on how good it was, and for only $7, its one of the many wines that proves our theory; good, cheap wine does exist.
Vote 85/100

Salina Rosso Hauner

Sometimes, we run into an easily drinkable and warm, reasonably cheap wine. A rare thing in NY where a bottle under $15 is usually comparable to something made by your grandfather in his basement. In any case the wine in which Im speaking of tonight is much better than your average 'Joe' wine. Salina Rosso from Hauner Vineyards is a delightful wine for only 10 bucks. A transparent but intense ruby red, Hauner is a non typical Sicilian wine with typical sicilian grapes. This Nero D'Avola and Nerello Mascalese mix, left intense traces of mature red fruits maybe some mixed with alcohol; and spices like vanilla and black pepper with a hint of salt. On the palate it was warm and soft, not to tannic or sapid with a good intensity and equilibrium. We drank ours with a pork skewers- typical Astorian cusine.
Vote 80/100

On a beautiful night outin NY, we met my cousin for a drink at a little restaurant on 19th. Boqueria is always full, claimed my cousin, we're lucky to have a table. And she was right- a bit after we arrived at 6:30 the wait had become an hour long. After a nice glass of Cava, I was missing my sparkling wines, we thought that maybe a bottle would be better since we were in three. Gran Sangre de Toro 2004 Riserve, by the Torres in Catalunya group was perfect with a few tapas we had chosen. 60% Garnacha Tinta, 25% Carinena and 15% syrah. After a year in barrique, the color was a ruby red verging on granite and the smell was powerful and full of spices like cloves, pepper, vanilla and cigars, fruits like blackberry and tomato leaves and florals like lavender. First sip was intense and smooth and reminded me of a good cigar. Full-bodied and persistant, with good amounts of tannins, alcohol and sugar (like most Spainish wine). Great by itself or with Tapas, we had chosen a Spainish salami plate, fried mini peppers and tomato bread, I would check out the restaurant and the bottle. Just a little warning- like most NY restaurants the prices can be a bit overwelming, so if you are on a budget, make sure you save up.

Chateau Haut Milon 2005, Pauillac

Pauillac is a province within the area of Haut-Medoc in Bordeaux, France. An area prized for its marvelous mix of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. In fact Pauillac is home to some of the most famous vineyards in Bordeaux, three of which are 1er cru classe: Latour, Lafite-Rotschild and Mouton-Rotschild. Pauillac has the highest concentration of Cabernet Sauvignon in its wines and has therefor a more concentrated structure. With this in mind, and only $30 in pocket, we picked up this bottle by Chateau Haut Milon, not a grand cru, but still posseses similar qualities to other Pauillacs.
A 2005, it has a ruby red color bordering rust, consistent and transparent. The most wonderful part of this wine is its smell. Intense notes of leather, wood, truffles, prunes, viola flowers, and hints of black pepper, cloves and other matured dark red fruits. After letting this powerful wine breath a bit, we realized how well balanced the structure was. Mineral, acidic, soft, warm, tannic and dry; persitant but not as much so as its intensity, its a wine that most people would enjoy. Cheese, salamis, tomato sauces and meats, its light enough, being that it is only a 2005, but structured enough to be paired with most foods.

Chateau Diana Pinot Grigio 6%

Not all wines are created equally, and this is a great example of a bad wine. Chateau Diana California's Pinot Grigio, is a strong yellow colored wine with intensly floral and fruity perfumes with reminiscence of exotic fruits like melon and pinapple, vanilla, camomille and honey. The first taste was so horrible that I spit it right out. Intensly aomatic, almost sweet (maybe due to the fact that there was only 6% alcohol) with the absence of freshness and minerality. Slightly overdated, I think the taste was closer to that of apple cider than wine, in fact, you're probably better off drinking cider than this disaster.

Sauvignon Blanc Oyster Bay 2006

Here in New York, you can find all types of bottles from all over the world. At our local wine shop in Astoria we picked up two: a Cannonao and a Sauvignon Blanc from Marlborough New Zealand. New Zealand is best known for its crisp SB's thanks to the cool year round weather. And, to add a bit of unknown information, Australia and NZ have put a new 'law' into affect asking wine producers to use plastic or glass corks instead of real cork due to high costs and possible extinction. The wine itself was a straw yellow and the perfume was your classic SB; grassy, vegetal, oregano, sage, white flowers, mainly from the wild and a touch of salt. On the palatte it was dry with medium softness and warm. The freshness and minerality fell after it was open a bit, while the intensity and persistance remained but with a bit of bitterness. For $10 the quality was worth the price and would be great with sushi or like food items.

Pedro Ximenez Osborne 17%

Americans in general are not as big on desert wines as say Italy, and tend to drink more alcoholic drinks like Cognac or Rum after dinner. But for those of us who don't have the stomach for such strong drinks there are many other choices.
A Sherry called Pedro Ximenez was our drink of choice one night out in Manhattan at a little tapas bar called Tierra on Seventh Ave. Pedro Ximenez, the sweetest of all sherrys, is made usually from about 90% of the same named grape and is mostly unknown to non-winos. With 17% alcohol the taste and color is somewhat similar to that of a Port wine, but a bit sweeter and without the tannins. The particular brand we had was by Osborne, a well known company who makes all types of sherrys. This PX was a mix of three grapes, Palomino (the main grape in all other sherrys), Muscadel and of course Pedro Ximenez. A deep ruby red with a high consistancy, it was intense and persistant with hints of red berries. Mature prunes, cinnamon, cloves, liquorish and vanilla. Sweet on the tongue but not overly so, soft and definatly alcoholic. It did however lack on the freshness and sapidity. The small glass cost $10, while the bottle in a store near us cost $13. In NY that isnt that bad. Do I dare say I miss Italy?
Vote 79/100

Ristoranti in Puglia

About a week before we left for New York, Paolo and I decided to take a little trip to the south and central parts of Italy. After seven hours of driving we arrived to the 'spur' of the boot of Italy called Gargano in the region of Puglia. We stayed in a town called Peschici, a city built on the top of a hill overlooking the Adriatic. The water was crystal clear and the rustic landscape was an image that took us back in time. An area which has grown as a tourist vacation spot only within the last 30 years, Peschici is still learning how to cope with the flow of people and the modern world. However, we did find two wonderful restaurants. The first, Fra Stephano offers typical fish dishes from the area in a homestyle fashion. We ate a delightful eggplant parm appetizer and an even more delicious 'alici in olio' or mini sardines cooked in a typical clay pot in boiling oil and pepperoncini. For our main dish, a grilled red snapper... yum! For drinks, a carafe of homemade white pugliese wine (verdecca) with a glass of desert moscato (also homemade) offered to us after dinner. All of this for under 50 euro... a definate steal.
Second night, new place to eat, a place written up as one of best new restaurants of the south. Porta di basso is a bit more expensive that what we had expected but quite good. Chef Domenico Cilenti uses a base of fish for his dishes and creates clever twists on traditional plates. The meal we had consisted of a tasting of antipasta including a pecorini ricotta omlette, a stuffed mussel, carpaccio of scorfano, sardine in eggplant and others. A braised scorfano in tomato broth for the main course and sorbet to close the deal. The best part of the place, was the view from the terrace, at which you are sitting on a ledge of rock looking straight down! I would definatly recommend arriving in time for sunset and staying long enough to watch the fishing boats floating out at see.

Marco Sara

Would like to appologize for the lack of posts lately but we were busy moving to New York! Im sure as most of you know, moving is not easy, and since we are renting out apartment in Venice, we had to prepare all that too! Ok, so enough of our stories and onto the wine!
Through our friend at Mondosapore, we were introduced to
Azienda Vinicola di Marco Sara. A young and promenent producer from the hills of Friuli, they are in fact the winners of the 'Menzione Eccellenza 2008' or in english the Mentino of excellence; for the Tigullio wine meeting in the Palazzo Ducale in Genova. This group uses only grapes indigenous to Fruili and makes only desert wines. The three we had the opportunity to try were:
Muffis dal Sis- 90% Tocai Friulano and 10% Moscato grapes with noblie rot
Verdis dal Sis- 100% Verduzzo grapes (also used to make Ramandolo DOCG)
Piculit dal Sis- 100% from Picolit grapes
All three were excellent. Typical perfumes of dried or candied apricot and fig and spices like cinnamon or cloves. The picolit, probably the more famous of the three, was the last we had and maybe the cleanest. Slightly mineral, sweet but not overbaringly so, fresh and easy to drink. The Verdis was a little more bitter and heavier than the rest, which is typical of the grape. Probably best with aged cheeses like parmagian because of its apricot marmalade/honey-like qualities. The Muffis, the first we had, was also quite fresh and intense, but a bit short in its persistance. Different yet similar to the more famous moldy wine sauternes, I think I would recommend this Muffis to anyone who loves an delightful an delicious desert wine without pretences.
Vote for all three-94/100

On a night finally at home, we decided to relax with an incredable bottle of Carmignano wine by Tenuta di Capezzana, Villa di Capezzana Carmignano D.O.C.G, 2000. Before anything else I must explain the deliciousness of this wine... more than anything else it left hints of cinnamon both in smell and taste, and the bottle was finished quite fast. 80% Sangiovese and 20% Cab. Sauvignon, this wine is your typical Tuscan feast. So why is this one so good? In case you havent figured it out yet, the land has everything to do with it, and the land here is situated around Chianti and Montalcino. An intense ruby red color, with elgegant, distinguishable smells of fruits like black cherry, blueberry and blackberry and slightly spicy (like I said before of cinnamon and maybe cloves). First sip was slightly alcoholic but when it opened flavors of spices, balsamic, dark red fruits mixed well with the slightly mineral and tannicness of the wine. It was well structured, soft, dense and persistant. And at half the price of a Brunello it was even better!
Vote 89/100

On a recent trip to Barcelona, I was fortunate enough to try some wines hardly found outside of Spain. For example a Cava, Spain's version of Champagne, Sherry, and a few diffferent reds from Rioja and Duero. One Rioja I picked up in the airport on my flight back to Venice (since you cant bring liquids into the airport you're left with no choice but to buy while waiting for flights!) Marques de Arienzo, Rioja DOC is your typical in your face tempranillo. This Crianza 2004, was ruby red in color and after left to breath for a good period (in fact it tasted better the second day after I opened it) filled our noses with complex and intese cherry, leather, chocolate, cinnamon and tabacco flavors- the initial taste was bit alcoholy which is why its better left open for a bit. Warm, dry and extremly soft; salty, slightly tannic and fresh, the overall taste was pretty well balanced, but maybe a little short on persistance. Great with white or red meats or keep it true to tapas or your favorite Jambon (raw ham) and Manchango cheese, Yum!
Vote 84/100

Vignalta one of the few producers in the Colli Euganei region in the Province of Padova, uses rare grapes types to create fantastic wines. This hilly region (really just two or three small hills) were formed 30 million years ago from an under the sea volcano. The mixture of lava and sea life left the ground in the area, rich in minerals and perfect for coltivating grapes. Almost all the grapes are white like 'Sirio' a dry moscato and 'Agno Casto' a Pinot Bianco made only during favorable years. Reds include Rosso Riserva, a typical bordolese cut; 'Gemola' the companies main focus, and a special desert wine called ''Il Nero' made from the extremely rare Moscato di Parenzo grape. Parenzo, the city, is found on the Croatian penninsula of Istria, and the grape was probably imported at some point in time from the area. The wine reminds us of a similar Moscato di Scanzo grape found in Lombardia. Both leave the grapes longer on the vine to dry out the water inside the grape and therefor consentrating the sugars. Aromas were that of chocolate, cinnamon, spices and matured fruits. The taste reminded us of something similar to a port wine, with a good persistance and velvetness on the tongue. Definatly enjoyable since port is one of my prefered wines. We had it with a duncan hines birthday cake, but surely can be drunk with other deserts or aged cheeses.
Vote 87/100

Voto 87/100.

Prosecco Sur Lie

Upon hearing about a tasting day out in Valdobbiadene, the prosecco region, we jumped at the chance to discover new wines. This fair which took place in the town of Guia, focused on proseccos 'sur lie' or Prosecco col fondo in italian, which pretty much means that they are made in the tradition 'champanoise' way of making sparkling wine. 32 producers offered up their version of this Venetian treat, as well as 11 sopressa makers (since the fair consisted of the two together) The four bottles we tried were by Mario Mattio, which offered a light and fresh but short tasting prosecco with very little bubbles; Canal Gilberto e Virgilio, which was good and mineral but also had short lasting bubbles; Vigento Vecio, my person favorite, which was delicate with slight florel hints and had slightly more resistant bubbles, and Ca' Salina, also quite florel, very dry, with a strong bread like taste. Unfortuantly prosecco isnt readily available outside of Italy, even outside the Veneto its hard to find. Its unfortuanate that its so unknown, maybe because often it is compared to champagne, the more well known and important, sparkling wine. BUt the two have nothing but fizz in common and prosecco just gets lost and pushed aside. The New York market offers very little in the way of prosecco and those that do exist are hardly some of the better brands.

Azienda Agricola Cecchini Marco

This past week here in Italy was a special due to the shooting stars that fall around this time of night every year. In the center of Mestre (the town just outside Venice) AIS held a fair called 'Calici di Stelle' or 'glasses of stars' which represented a few wine producers in the Veneto in Fruili. For 5 euros you could taste all you wanted!
One very prepared producer from Friuli we met was Azienda di Marco Cecchini. With a variety of grape types, they offer whites such as Pinot Grigio and Tove', which is also a white wine and combines Tocai Fruilana at 90% and Verduzzo at 10%. Really fresh and mineral, the Tove' carries out clean profumes of white fruit and flowers. Their red, the indiginous Refosco, was intense, complex and and soft. For a final treat they offer Verlit and Picolit. Both sweet desert wines the Verlit is made from the mertage of Verduzzo and Picolit grapes. Mature apricot and fig aromas filled our noses, while its velvet like consistancy remained on our tongues. Quite interesting and different then the normal desert wines. And if youre into grappa... they have that too.

Fantastico!
Una vera stella tra i calici.

'Le Difese' Tenuta San Guido

Tenuta San Guido are the guys to know. By going ouside of the box and using tradition french wines (Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot) in a strictly Sangiovese terrior, little did they know they would stir up the wine world and create such fantastic wines. These guys created the label 'Supertuscan' and their major wine, Sassicaia, is one of the most infamous reds in existance. Since not everyone can afford the sometimes outragous prices of the Sassicaia, a more affordable bottle, 'Le Difese,' was created. Three fourths Sangiovese and one fourth Cabernet, the 2003 vintage is heavenly. With 13% alcohol, it spends 14 months in French and American oak barriques. A ruby red color and slow moving legs lets us know whats ahead. Persistant red fruit profumes are strong enough to fill the room. Upon tasting, the warm, velvety feeling makes us smile. It has a good structure, and a right amount of freshness, mineralty and alcohol. Good work guys.
Vote 90/100

Good 'international' cuisine can be hard to find in Italy especially since the Italians are so proud of their own. But, once and awhile you can stumble on something really great. Sushi Su located just outside the city wall of Padovais real traditional japanese. Although the menu is not as extensive as what you'd find in restaurant in New York, or Japan for that matter, there are mainly items worth trying. Sushi and Sashimi plates, tuna or salmon tartar. Traditional miso or kani (crab) soup (tastes just like what we had in Kyoto) for cooler nights... or even hot ones, like we did since we were there in only last week. Not one for raw fish? They have Terriyaki and Tempura. We orderd plates from the later. Perfectly fried spring rolls, tempura-ed veggies, scampi and lobster. Everything was moist, tender and absolutly deliscious. Of course with all of this we needed something equally as good but nothing that would have over powered the delicateness of the fish. Whites naturally where our choice, three in total, two were from our ever reliable Jermann from the the hills of Fruili; Sauvignon Blanc and il Vinae, the second being a blend of Ribolla, Reisling and Malvasia. The wine list/menu is actually quite good, including some sake of course, and layed out newspaper style on transparent paper. But thats not the only design notable. The restaurant itself is quite interesting with lowered tables, green doors, dangling ropes and odd-shaped walls. Located on the second floor (su meaning up in italian) and therefor giving its name, it has a sister restautant called Sushi Gu (or down in Italian) and a few others located all within driving ditance. If ever in Italy and in need of an anti-italian fix.... go to sushi su.

Morimoto New York City

While visiting friends and family in NY the first two weeks of July we had the fortune of going to Morimoto's restaurant in the meatpacking district. For those of you who are not familiar with the 'Iron Chef,' listen up! Morimoto has restaurants all over of the world from Japan to Philadelphia to NY. The super trendy interior designs and his nouveau japanese dishes are greatly appriciated by celebs and peasents alike- although if you are on a budget, buying his cook book might be a better option. Appetizers of tempura shrimp in wasabi or korean sauce, pulled pork, lobster balls, gyoza and tuna tartar (my favorite) where a great way to start off the meal. Paired with a Sauvignon Blanc from France, the crisp and light accents of the wine didn't distract you from the subtleness of the fish in each dish. Roasted duck with plum wine sauce, seabass over tomato and eggplant with lemongrass juice and of course a sushi/sashimi plate where next in line and shared with a bottle of Sancerre. After dinner we ordered a few deserts, mainly all based with chocolate, but as for me (a non chocolaholic) I had a 40yr old Port which completed the deliciously splendid evening.

Prime Uve Nere Bonaventura Maschio

Aw! Our first grappa article! Well... not exaclty grappa, but acquavite d'uva. Whats the difference, you might ask? Well, both are distillations from grape byproducts, but grappa is made from the 'vinacce', or leftovers after pressing, mainly squished skins and seeds. Acquavite is made from the must of wine, or the wine before it is fermented. A slight but big difference. In any case, the acquavite in particular we are writing about it Nere, by Prime Uve. The society is four generations in the making starting with Mr. Antonio Maschio until arriving to today. They produce the grappa in an area called Gaiarine around Treviso. Gaiarine is probably named after the kind of soil present in the area. Made from Cabernet and Refosco grapes, distilled and aged in oak barrels, it is closer in taste to a red wine then most grappa I've tasted- maybe this is the difference between grappa and acquavite... Strong, elegant and velvety with vanilla, fruits and oak scents and flavors. A great after dinner drink.

Chateau Lamothe Vincent Sauvignon Semillon

Unlike most Americans, who drink good old american beer the 4th of July, we decided instead to have a bottle of french wine... I know, very unpatriotic, but if given the opportunity to try something you've never had before, why not? This particular bottle we picked up in a liquor store in my hometown; Rockville Centre. They have a pretty good selection of wines all over the world, which is great for someone who just wants to try different wines. So getting down to business... we bought a bottle of a semillon and sauvignon blanc blend by Chateau Lamothe Vincent, and brought it to our bbq- i know- very un 4th like. But it was much better than we even thought it would be. These grapes normally used to make Sauternes in Bordeaux make a fantastic wine. Straw yellow with intense perfumes and a medium complexity. Floral and fruity with slight mineral and erby scents. When drunk, we are reminded of these white fruits (peach, apricot) and of its minerality. Definatly soft and welcoming on the palate, with a good freshness that balances out the alcohol. Intense and with a medium persistance. Overall a steal for only $11!

Intenso all`ingresso in bocca e abbastanza persistente.
