Lavico e Rosso D'Altarocca della Cantina Altarocca

Big fans of Umbria we are, but the wines created by Cantina Altarocca- not so much. We tried their 'Lavico' and the merlot, both of which were over the top in alcohol. The Lavico, made from Merlot, Cabernet and Sangiovese had a delightful bouquet but fell short when the cinamin, vanilla, clove and cherry smells didnt carry on to the taste. The merlot was also a beautiful red color represntative of most merlots, but unfortuanatly too unbalanced- the freshness indicative of merlot wasnt there and the grape was masked by the heavy wood tannins and alcohol.
Vote 75/100

After returning from a relaxing trip in Sardegna, we finally have some time to write about the great food and wine we had there. Unfortuanately, this once desolate island has become a huge tourist trap and authentic food and people have become harder to find. However, we did discover a few good places for original tastes. Aged pecorino cheese wrapped in mirto leaves, mirto (which I am a huge fan of and will discuss later), bottarga; which is dried tuna or mullet fish egg usually grated over pasta, gnocchetti sardi and many others.
At a very well informed wine store in the town of Castelsardo, we were introduced to an interesting and hard to find wine by the Azienda Carpante called Carpante Rosso. Its a 2006 harvest produced in Usini in the province of Sassari. This young vineyard grows your typical Sardegnian grapes like Cannonau, and Vermentino with some harder to pronounce, harder to find grapes like Cagnulari, Maristellu and Pascale. The Carpante Rosso is a blend of 90% Cagnulari and 10% Pascale or Bovale. All of the vines are in 'tree' form and have an age of around 30 yrs.
The wine is an intense ruby red color with purple highlights. Equally intense profumes of mirto (Mmmm), ripe cherries, liquorish and black pepper. The taste was warm and fresh, slightly mineral and had a touch of tannin. It was definatly still on the young side but interesting the same. The red fruit aromas continued through in the mouth and was much better when paired with some pecorino.

Maso Martis Brut Riserva

This sparkler was definately not what I was expecting. During our Italian sparkling wine night and tapas, this Brut Riserva by Maso Martis came into the mix. A full bouquet of flowers and ripe fruits like pear, it turns out that the taste is a bit sweeter than most champagne styled wines. Not that it was bad, but maybe it would be better served as an after or pre dinner drink or with raw fish as recommended by the azienda. Vanilla was the main subject on our pallate, reminding us of resemblences like cream soda and vanilla waffer cookies. Grown and produced in Trento, the mix is 70% Pinot grigio, 25% Chardonnay and 5% Pinot Meunier. The bubbles were fine and persistant and overall this is a wine of optimum quality, a brilliant golden color and is well rounded and balanced. Trento Doc the upcoming region of classic method sparkling wines has a lot to offer and is slowing becoming as well recognized as its famous rival Champagne. With a wider range of flavors, for example this Brut by Masi Martis, we're looking forward to see where these wines can take us.

Pesce e piatti estivi. Da abusarne!!!

Podere San Giacomo, Brunello 2003

I absolutely love this wine. We were introduced to this new-comer at the Brunello convention in Montalcino in February and since then, we havent been able to stop talking about it. The 2003 Brunello is the first vintage put out by Podere San Giacomo, and what a wine it is. Fruity and fresh, it is a younger tasting brunello, but still creates the depth needed to be considered a top wine. Even the ruby-like color reminds us of it youthfullness unlike many brunellos which can have an orange nail. Berries, spices and a warm cream are some of the many aromas, and with 13.5% alcohol its warm and velvety. WIth such a great start we're sure Podere San Giacomo is going places. They also make a fantastic Rosso di Montalcino.

Prodotto in 3000 bottiglie. Assolutamente da avere nella propria cantina.

Masi Amarone 1995, Serego Alighieri Vaio Amaron

Drinking a special bottle with friends who also appreciate fine wine, is a beautiful thing. During our hot spell here in Venice last week, amongst our many great bottles was an impressive Amarone by Masi. As we've mentioned before, the Amarone wine is one of the more important Italian wines and also one of the hardest to make- making it one of the more expensive. Masi, one of the more well known producers, created a fantastic, almost syrupy, well rounded wine with its 1995 vintage. Upon opening this bottle, you'll need to let it breath a bit before all the really important flavors can properly develope. A dark granite verging on orange color, with slow moving legs thick on the glass, engulfing the very intense and bountiful aromas. Tabacco, white chocolate, leather, marmalades, and red fruits in alcohol, to name a few. Extremely velvety, a slight sweetness, intense, well balanced, persistant and harmonious. Great with everything from aged cheese to a juicy steak.

Grazie Masi.

Sutto Ultimo

In the area of Treviso, a star is born. Located about 40 kilometers north of Venice, this terratory is not really known outside of the Veneto and really only produces international wines. Sutto, who has 50 acres and produces many different wines from Merlot to Pinot Grigio has put a mouth watering desert wine, made from the Veruzzo and Sauvignon grapes. Ultimo, created from late harvested wines is a golden yellow wine with a nose full of aromas like fig, honey, almond and even a hint of white chocolate. It is elegant and soft in the mouth and not overpowerly sweet- it still holds its freshness, which for a sweet wine is sometimes hard to achieve. A good intensity and persistance. Great when paired with fruit cakes and othe deserts- we had ours with a peach champagne mouse.

While working at Vinitaly, a wine fair in Verona the first week of April, I had the fortune of meeting a distributor for Portugal wine named Marcio Ferreira (Vini Portugal). Although I found some of the wines to be a bit strong or alcoholic, a few stood out in my mind. The first, a tawny port by Casa de Santa Eufemia. With 19.5% in alcohol, I can still consider this port to be easier and fruiter than other tawnies Ive had in the past. Granite in color and obviously consistant it still remained transparent throughout. An overall intenseness with many smells like leather, tobacco, coffee and chocolate- which comes from its time in barrel- raisins, cinnamin, cloves, dried herbs, figs and prunes. Even the smoothness of the wine came through with just one sniff. Unfortuanatly if was a bit short in its persistancy and freshness, but the bouque showed in the taste which is something that doesnt often happen. The warm, velvety, milk chocolate filled my mouth while the strength of the alcohol filled my stomach. A robust wine great to pair with chocolaty desserts... an ooze cake perhaps?
