Osteria da Mariano

Going on the request of a friend, we stopped by Ostaria da Mariano to have a drink and some ciccheti (or venetian styled tapas) Located in the heart of Mestre in Via Spalti 49, the main city just outside Venice on the mainland, and close to where we live, it was incredable that I've never heard of this place before. Upon entry we asked what wines they had open for us to taste. We both took the Tocai Rosso- an indigenous wine from the area around Vicenza. Mentioning that we were sent by a friend and that we are studying to be sommeliers, the two owners, Antonio and Nadia (also husband and wife) went crazy for us! Try this try that- study this study that. They even gave us their own AIS sommelier books from the course they took back in the 80's. I love meeting such nice, friendly people, especially after a long day at work! They offered us some of their cheeses, some of which were pretty rare. Four types, recommended the husband, who is a cheese afficianato. Bra, Rockeforte, and other Piedmontese cheese, all were amazing and paired nicely with the Tocai. They also had us taste the cheese with a Valpolicella which, still red, is more rounded, heavier and more tannic. This too paired well, but since it was a nice, warm day out I opted to stick with the Tocai. (Tocai is also known as Cannonau in Sardegna, Grenache in France, and Garnache in Spain) After looking at their wine cellar and discussing what could be possible questions for the sommelier test we have in three weeks, we desided it was time to go home. Osteria da Mariano is open for lunch monday through friday and dinner wednesday through friday (thats right they're closed on the weekends!) Its a short trip from Venice on bus, if you are in the area.

Si trova nel centro di Mestre esattamente in Via Spalti 49 (tel 041 615765). Un posto straordinario!!
Non avevo mai sentito parlare di questo locale. Appena entrati abbiamo chiesto cosa potevamo bere e loro ci hanno consigliato un ottimo Tocai Rosso, un vino autoctono della zona del vicentino.
Parlando come è usuale del nostro corso A.I.S. che stiamo terminado, siamo stati invasi dal loro entusiasmo per il vino di qualità. Allora hanno cominciato col dirci di provare questo di provare quello, di studiare questo argomento meglio dell'altro. Ci hanno perfino regalato dei libri. Uno dei quali riguarda il corso del II livello AIS, la particolarità sta che era stato stampato negli anni '80 ,una vera rarità. Amo incontrare persone gentili ed intelligenti.
Ci hanno servito 4 formaggi interessanti tra i quali Il Bra e il Rockeforte entrambi esprimevano una grande sapidità e sopratutto una lunga persistenza gusto olfattiva .
Abbinati al Tocai Rosso e poi al Valpolicella Superiore l'armonia era di casa.
Il Tocai Rosso in Sardegna è conosciuto come Cannonau, in Spagna come Garnache e in Francia come Grenache !!!
Un consiglio se siete dalle parti di Mestre e volete avere momenti interessanti a livello gustativo passate da loro.
Sono anche associati allo Slowfood.
