Del Frisco's and the Slaughterhouse

What I love best about American steak houses is the masculinity in them. High ceiling, dark wood, low lighting; they really invite you to sit back in their large, plush seats and chow down on a large slab of meat! To celebrate my fathers birthday, the whole family went out for a big steak dinner at Del Frisco's. Located on 6th ave at 49th street, this place is wonderful for after work happy hour and great food. What was on our menu? Really crabby crabcakes, salad, shoestring fries, brown sugar coated sweet potato puree, large cut onion rings, steak tartar and of course steak. My favorite was the bone-in filet. Amazingly tender and juicy, the bone really added to the flavor of the steak. But what really brought out the succulence of the meat- the Slaughterhouse wine. A warm cabernet sauvignon from a small producer in Rutherford, California, Slaughterhouse is the type of vineyard that I'm always looking for. The price-quality ratio was unexpected, especially when recommended by one of the sommeliers of the restaurant.
The intense aromas; juicy berries, violets and forest, made my mouth water. The well rounded, elegant and warm feeling filled my palate, while the aromas turned to taste and lingered on my tongue. The pairing was perfect- it has just enough alcohol and tannins to clear my tastebuds and prepare me for my next bite of steak. The still purplish color let me know that the wine would age gracefully and would be a great purchase for any cellar.
