Beaujolais Nouveau Domaine Dupeuble Pere et Fils 2008 12,5%

November is the month of Beaujolais and Novello. Two wonderfully unique and fresh wines produced in a manor to be drunk and enjoyed early while all other wines are maturing. This November we've been drinking a lot more beaujolais than novello's (which are different than the french version and which I miss) but we did have one interesting one by Domaine Dupeuble Pere et Fils. The purple color is typical to these extremely young wines as well as its purfumes- fresh red and purple fruits and flowers, especially strawberries and grapes. This bottle in particular was drier and softer than other rescent beaujolais Ive had (George Doeuff), with discrete amounts of tannins and heat. Ready to drink and unageable, the beaujolais is best drunk within the first year its born.

Radikon Oslavje 2003 14%

At our apartment for dinner with a great group of friends, we opened and drank a cellarsworth of wine one bottle in particular was Radikon. A name well known amoungst wino's, Ive been waiting to try this particular juice. Like my husband said, it was like a child on christmas getting the toy he asked for. The vineyard, Stanko Radikon is located in the Friuli region of Italy in the province of Gorizia, which is near the Slovanian border. The 10 hectors of land they own produce a large quantity of grapes such as; Ribolla gialla, Chardonnay, Pinot grigio, Sauvignon, Tocai friulano e Merlot. Whats so special about this wine? Well there are a few things, the first being the absence of added yeast. Therefor maceration and fermentation happen naturally with the yeast found only the skins and stems of the grape. Because they are left in the fermentation tank they wine is darker in color (a white wine) then most. The wine is never filtered and sulfites are never added, leaving these yeasts in the liquid and the final product is thicker looking and has pieces of sediment. So why is this a good thing? well first, is all natural- but because there are no sulfites you won't get that 'wine headache' typical especially of whites. But more importantly, all this creates very individual and unique tastes and smells. The Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Grigio used for this particular bottle produces an intense amber yellow wine, with smells of apricot, pinapple, candied fruits and stone. Soft, warm, fresh and mineral with even a touch of tannin (due to the time spent in barique). It wass well balanced and persistant, and unlike anything Ive had before. I must admit though that I was not as impressed as my friends, maybe because the slight hint of oxidation is not something I particularly enjoy. However, I must applaud them for their effort in production and the uniqueness of the wine. I recommened Radikon to everyone to try, but it does have a high price...

Donnhoff Riesling Auslese 7.5% vol.

On a trip to an upper east side wine shop for a tasting, we came across a bottle of Riesling, from the Nahe region in southwest Germany. We found it in the desert area mixed with others after dinner wines and thought it looked interesting. Riesling, is the principle grape in this country, where winters are long and cold and sun exposure is short. In Nahe, these grapes are grown alongside the river Reno, giving the vines the nutrients they need to survive. The terrain is diverse and rich of quartz which it receives from its branching streams; the Idarbch, Kyrbach, Hahnenbach and Simmerbach.
The classification of German wines can be quite confusing too, since they are rated by the quantity of sugar in the grape. This particular Riesling is an Auslese, which means that the grapes were harvested late in the season, and there is an elevated amount of sugar (but not much compared to Icewein!) The amount of alcohol is 7%, which is low due to the low amount of sun. Getting to the 'gustazione' of the wine itself, the Riesling della Azienda Donnhoff is a clear, vivascious straw color, with perfumes of golden apples, pinapple, grapefruit and a note of fresh flowers, musk and sage. The taste was obviously sweet, but not overpoweringly so. Medium softness, low heat, and higher amounts of acidity and minerality. Intense and persistent, it would be great with German treats like a Danish or struddle or a classic American dish like apple pie.

Umbria II

After one of the best nights sleep we've had in awhile, we woke, opened the window and took in a deep breath of fresh mountain air. A new day with new hopes and expectations. A warm cappucino and homemade cakes were waiting for us when we came downstairs and as usual we ate too much. The owner, Angelo, had told us the night before that his wife, Assunta, had another restaurant in the next town over of Bevagna, so we set off to dine at her small boutique. Her place 'La Bottega di Assu' reminded me of a cafe in Paris or maybe in the Village; walls covered in fotos and stacks of books on wine and food pilled high on the floor. We sat outside, even though it was windy, and with a bottle of Grecante of Caprai, ate a wonderful bruscetta of fresh veggies and a drizzle of Umbrian oil. Paolo then had a soup, and for me, a pasta. The town was quiet, but still beautiful. After lunch we went to meet Andrea, the brazilian woman we booked our B&B for us. An artist who has been married and living in Umbria now for years, she showed us her studio of ceramic sculptures, located in the city of Foligno. Afterward, we walked through the city back towards our car and discovered a party. Every year around the beginning of September, the town recreates 'medival times.' The city is divided into parts, and they battle each other for honor. Dressed in traditional clothes they ride their horses through the city and with a jousting stick pick up rings hung throughout the town. The one with the most rings wins. We decided to join in the fun and entered the hall of the 'jousters' for dinner. Before dinner was over, a contest between some of the groups started up over who could drum better. A bit much, but we went home smiling. Upon arriving back at the B&B, we couldnt help but order another glass of sagrantino and some jambon from Spain. I think I must have gained 5 lbs already. We stayed up late talking to the waitress Paola about ideas for the future and of course our love of wine.

Adoro Montefalco!!!

Umbria Part I

To go back a bit in time, Ive been meaning to tell you all about our trip tp Umbria. Since our time in Puglia wasnt going as planned, we decided to make a change and go north to Umbria. On a recomondation from a friend, and our love of Sagrantino, we headed to a medival town call Montefalco, to stay for three nights in a bed and breakfast. After a 13 hour drive (yes you read correctly) we arrived in the city around 10 pm exhausted from everything. Our horrible mood changed as soon as we were greeted at our car by a woman who worked at the wine bar/restaurant at the B&B. A beautiful wall-in city made of stone with small alleyways reminding you of what times were like before cars. The place called Spirito di vino was amazing. We were brought up to our room (one of three) and melted into the bed. It was amazing. Clean, well put together and restored, we began to forget about our prior days. After a shower we headed downstairs for something to eat. Their menu was great. Typical Umbrian cusine with a choice of the best salami, proscuittos and cheese from all over Europe. 20 types of oils and a long wine line (including of course almost all of the Sagrantinos!) We opted for a cheese and proscuitto plate (duh) a tomato soup and a steak; to be washed down of course with a full bodied Sagrantino di Montefalco Azienda Tabarrini. Everything was delicious. After dinner we headed upstairs to bed, thanking our friends for helping us find this little jewel.

Plantaze Vranac 2004 Lake Skadar Valley 12,5

On our quest to find great wine for a great price, we stumbled upon a random bottle at our local wine shop called Vranac dell'azienza Plantaze. Haling from Montenegro, (a small country next to Croatia, for those of you who dont know) this winery produces a few wine types, but the one we had was a Vranac, an indiginous red.
While repeating this stange new name over and over in my head, I studied the color: a ruby red with granite highlights; the smell: very likeable fruits (prugnes and strawberries), floreals (violets and violas) and earth (tabacco and cocao); and taste: dry, soft and warm with a good persistance and intesity, more mineral than acidic, and a good amount of tannins, however leaving just a touch of bitterness at the end. A complete surprise on how good it was, and for only $7, its one of the many wines that proves our theory; good, cheap wine does exist.
Vote 85/100

Salina Rosso Hauner

Sometimes, we run into an easily drinkable and warm, reasonably cheap wine. A rare thing in NY where a bottle under $15 is usually comparable to something made by your grandfather in his basement. In any case the wine in which Im speaking of tonight is much better than your average 'Joe' wine. Salina Rosso from Hauner Vineyards is a delightful wine for only 10 bucks. A transparent but intense ruby red, Hauner is a non typical Sicilian wine with typical sicilian grapes. This Nero D'Avola and Nerello Mascalese mix, left intense traces of mature red fruits maybe some mixed with alcohol; and spices like vanilla and black pepper with a hint of salt. On the palate it was warm and soft, not to tannic or sapid with a good intensity and equilibrium. We drank ours with a pork skewers- typical Astorian cusine.
Vote 80/100
